Equal Suffrage League of Virginia float depicting the Barge of State with Victory at the prow.

This photograph was taken at the Thrift Day Parade held the afternoon of Saturday, March 23, 1918 in Richmond, VA. According to newspaper reports, over 20,000 people participated and over 100 floats were present.

This photograph was published in the April 20, 1918 issue of The Woman Citizen. Adele Clark and Nora Houston, Richmond art teachers and leaders in the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia (ESL), decorated the float which was sponsored by the Richmond league of the ESL.

The “boat” was occupied by children and others in costumes representing “the extensive war service work being done by the League in conservation, Red Cross, Liberty Loan and food production” (Woman Citizen, 414).

The location of this image is the 100 block of the N. 4th St. directly across the street from the ESL headquarters. Holding the ESL banner are Ida Mae Thompson (1866–1947) and Edith Clark Cowles (1874-1954), both members of the ESL. Ralph Harvie Wormeley is dressed as Uncle Sam, with Adeline Harmon Cowles as Columbia, beside him. In the seat in front of them is Martha Jobson as Democracy.

See the phototgraph <a href="https://images.socialwelfare.library.vcu.edu/items/show/487" target="_blank" title=""We Fight for Democracy" photo" rel="noreferrer noopener">"We Fight for Democracy" for a portrait of Uncle Sam, Columbia and Democracy who holds a ballot box.

Laws of Virginia with Regard to Women Contrasted with Laws Where Women Vote [Equal Suffrage League handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
This sheet compares Virginia laws pertaining to women with those of states where female suffrage already had been approved. Arranged in two contrasting columns, the sheet presents twelve points and includes an Equal Suffrage League of Virginia enrollment form on the second page. Laws covered include those relating to property rights, inheritance, and parental guardianship.

The League was founded in 1909 and included prominent women such as Adèle Clark, Ellen Glasgow, Mary Johnston, Mary Munford, Nora Houston, and Lila Meade Valentine (the league’s first president). After a decade of failure to convince Virginia’s representatives that women should have the vote, the League switched focus to winning Congressional passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.
Equal Suffrage and the Negro Vote [broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
This broadside was issued by the Equal Suffrage League in about 1916.

Southern suffragists were forced to respond to anti-suffrage groups who argued that if African American women gained the right to vote, white supremacy would be threatened. Although some prominent suffragists claimed that their response was borne only out of expedience, and not principle, they nonetheless employed Jim Crow arguments by emphasizing the power of the literacy test and the poll tax.

Religious and Social Aspect of the Suffrage Movement
Description
An account of the resource
Essay, published in pamphlet form, which sets forth the religious and social foundations of the woman suffrage movement. The essay begins:

Page 1: "There is in the suffrage movement a religious element, a deep strain of spirituality and altruism, which gives it a peculiar moral significance, and fully justifies faith in its ultimate vindication."

Page 4: "The Christian world is awakening as never before to its social duties. Followers of Christ are becomming more keenly alive to the necessity for social service if His teachings are really to regenerate and redeem mankind. The terms "social betterment" and "social uplift" are daily becoming more familiar."

Page 14: "Under our present chaotic and unequal state of affairs, it is the duty of each individual to earnestly seek the causes and resulting in the flagrant abuses and wrongs going on about us, and to expend every effort in their re-adjustment. This should be as fully a part of our religion as the performance of any other obligation, and it is with just such a spirit that women all over the world have thrown heart and soul into the suffrage cause, believing that it is one of the forst steps towards a more equitable arrangement of society."

Page 19: "Let us awake to the needs of the world about us, to a sense of our individual responsibility in meeting those needs, and to our opportunities for serving God and man."

Pamphlet printed by Caplon Printing Co., Richmond, Virginia

Virginia Suffrage News, vol. 1, no. 1, October 1, 1914
Description
An account of the resource
First issue of the Virginia Suffrage News, a monthly newspaper published by the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia.

From masthead p. 4
Alice Overbey Taylor, Managing Editor
Mr.s G. Harvey Clarke (Mary Pollard Clarke), Editor-in-Chief
Contributing Editors:
Mrs. Kate Waller Barrett
Mrs. Kate Langley Bosher
Mrs. Emma Speed Sampson
Miss Mary Johnston
Mr. Carter Wormeley
Mrs. Sally Nelson Robins
Miss Cally Ryland

The lead article is "W. J. Bryan, Secretary of State, Declares for Woman Suffrage"

Foreword message from Lila Meade Valentine, President of the ESL of Virginia (p. 1)

"The movement for the enfranchisement of woman has become so widespread in Virginia that there is great need for a regular means of communication between workers and sympathizers in all parts of the State....

For this is pre-eminently a co-operative movement--one in which good team work is required--one in which we must all pull together with a right good will.

To do this effectively, we need the stimulus of the exchange of ideas, we need to inform ourselves of the activities of our local Leagues, as well as of the larger movement outside.

To meet these needs, I commend to the suffragists of the State the "Virginia Suffrage News," which should bind us together in one harmonious whole, and I bespeak for it a wide circulation amongst all those interested in this next great step in the development of women."

p. 8 "Suffragists Chuckle Over 'Etching' That Was Never Made for 'Lack of Space.'" recounts the story of an anti-suffrage essay contest held by the Richmond News-Leader, an "all-white" paper. The newspaper intended to publish an etching (portrait) of the winner until it was discovered that she was an African American.

Planks from the Suffrage Platform --as Stated by Mrs. C. C. Catt [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Anti-suffrage handbill uses quotations to make its case that woman suffrage supports racial equality and will lead to intermarriage, advances feminist views, is unpatriotic and does not support the war effort or the Constitution of the United States. The Equal Suffrage League of Virginia and the Equal Suffrage League of Richmond are both named.

The writer of the handbill asks, "Is our Constitution another scrap of paper? Do YOU endorse these doctrines?"

The Rights of the People -- Women Are People. Suffrage Victory Map [ESL of Virginia / NAWSA broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
This broadside has a map at top that shows the extent of woman suffrage across the United States. At this time, women could vote in presidential elections in some states; in municipal elections in others; and only with regard to school bond and tax matters in others.

The lower half of the broadside is titled "VIRGINIA WOMEN WANT THE VOTE." The text was created by the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia. It argues that two out of three women across the state, in both rural and urban location, are suffragists. "Virginia women who are asking for enfranchisement are BY NO MEANS A SMALL MINORITY."

"The child and the home are the greatest assets of the nation.
The Farmer's Wife is his working partner. She helps him to pay taxes on roads and schools. She should have the right on where and how these roads and schools are built; to elect the school trustees who determine what her children shall be taught."

"Virginia wives and mothers should vote upon public health laws and moral laws which vitally affect the welfare of the family."

The broadside then addresses the argument that a federal amendment permitting women to vote will increase the voting power of African Americans in the south. With the Civil War and Reconstruction only fifty-four years in the past, the southern states were against any federal law reducing their right to control who could vote. The ESL makes the argument that the states' power to levy poll taxes, have residency requirements, and require that voters be able to read and write will be sufficient.

"Whte Supremacy. There is now no negro domination under male suffrage in the counties in Virginia where white people are in the minority, and there will be no negro domination with men and women voting."

The broadside also argues that women are conservative voters, so woman suffrage will not increase the socialist vote.

Suffrage Rally, May 1, 1915, Richmond, Va. [photographs]
Description
An account of the resource
These photographs document a suffrage rally held on the south portico of the Virginia Capitol on May 1, 1915. Dr. E. N. Calisch, rabbi of Congregation Beth Ahabah, spoke in favor of woman suffrage at the event. Joy Montgomery Higgins of Nebraska addressed the crowd next.

The Equal Suffrage League was denied permission to speak on city streets by Richmond Mayor Ainslie, on the grounds that, while there was no law forbidding them to speak, neither was there one that allowed him to grant them a permit. The women proceeded to give speeches from inside an automobile, and the event was documented and reported by the Richmond Times-Dispatch on May, 2, 1915. According to the paper,

Floating suffrage banners, fluttering yellow ribbons, silver-toned bugles, and a brass band proclaimed the fact that yesterday was Equal Suffrage Day in Richmond, as well as in every other town and city of the United States.

Throughout the morning forty women, at eleven stands about the city, sold copies of the Woman's Journal, and suffrage flags, buttons, and postcards. The cordial and sympathetic attitude shown by the public was regarded as a striking illustration of the change in public opinion effected during the last few years.

By June, ESL members had successfully secured a permit to speak on city streets.

Note: Images displayed here are black and white copies of the original photographs.

Automobile identified as that of Mrs. W. W. Foster. Occupants of the vehicle are: (back seat) Mrs. Alice Overby Taylor, Mrs. W. Hill Urquhart, Jr., Mrs. G.
