Letter to H. D. Dillard from Martin L. Calhoun, Alabama Male Association Opposed to Woman's Suffrage [typed letter, signed]
Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Martin L. Calhoun, Secretary Treasurer of the Alabama Male Association Opposed to Woman's Suffrage dated 15 August 1919.

The letter was sent to the Hon. H. D. Dillard (of Franklin County, Va.), General Assembly, Richmond, Va.

Calhoun is opposed to the Fifteenth Amendment (which prohibits the federal government and each state from denying a citizen the right to vote based on that citizen's "race, color, or previous condition of servitude") and the ratification of the proposed "Anthony Amendment" (which would become the Nineteenth Amendment). The letter associates woman suffrage, African American suffrage, and socialism.

The organization's platform is printed on this letterhead near the top of the page.

"Platform:--The Alabama Male Association Opposed to Woman's Suffrage--
Stands for HOME and NATIONAL DEFENSE aggainst Woman's Suffrage, Feminismand Socialism. For MAN-POWER in Government, believing that Democracy must be STRONG to be SAFE. For the PRESERVATION of the established foundations of the American Republic as a Model for the World. For the RECOGNITION and ENFORCEMENT of the INHERENT RIGHT of EACH STATE to control the question of Woman's Suffrage for ITSELF. For EFFICIENCY and PROGRESS without Waste and Duplication in Government. For the CONSERVATION of the BEST WOMANHOOD of all conditions and stations in life, along NON-PARTISAN lines, so that the interests of Womanhood, Childhood and Civilization may be advanced FREE from the strife and division of politics, factions and parties. For the retention of the BEST IDEALS of the past, adapted to the advantages and opportunities given women under modern conditions, so that the FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES of Morality, of Patriotism and of World Progress may be more firmly established in the present and future generations."

Excerpt of letter text:
"Susan B. Anthony was instrumental in securing the Fifteenth Article to the Federal Constitution, the adoption of which has always stood as a blot on the escutchen of our Country. Her purpose and intent was to further humiliate and oppress the then down trodden South. This in itself should condemn her namesake in the heart of every true Southerner.

We are calling upon all the Southern States to REJECT [handwritten in margin "(it now)"] her namesake and if we can get the twelve Southern States to the two which have rejected - Georgia and Alabama - we can bury Old Susan where she belongs.

If we, of the South, surrender our control of suffrage to the Federal Government we should not complain of the Fifteenth Amendment or what may follow under the adoption of the Anthony Amendment, for we would be traitors to that grand martyr of your State- Robert E. Lee and we are not worthy of our sires."

What Have Women Done With the Vote?
Description
An account of the resource
This article written by George Creel originally appeared in the March 1914 issue of Century Magazine and was reprinted in pamphlet form by the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Creel's article provides an analysis of the consequences of women being granted the right to vote, including the social, political, and economic implications.

"The opponents of equal suffrage never tire of declaring that woman's place is the home. I agree with them most heartily. It is because of the home that I want women to have the vote... I have always thought, and still think that a government entirely by men is as stupid as a government entirely by women would be. There are as many home features in municipal or state administration as business features...."

Votes for Men. [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Anti-suffrage handbill arguing that women have the right to exemption from political duties and to protection, "even against herself, if need be."

An advertisement for a weekly journal, The Woman Patriot, is included on this handbill.

Excerpts:

"VOTES FOR MEN
============
'It's up to you, Son," says Uncle Sam.'
Stand by the Women!
Vote for Women's Rights!

The one indisputable right of woman in relation to the State is exemption from political duties.

If you vote for the ballot for women, you vote to start a corrupting force for all heedless women, a burden on good women. The man who opposes women's so-called emancipation is the far-sighted lover of his country and his kind.

Can man do woman's work? No, no more can woman do man's work. Man and Woman stand side by side as two EQUAL but DIVERSE human entities. Woman's nature is fundamentally organically different from man's.

Her right is the right to protection. The whole duty of man towards woman is to protect her, even against herself, if need be. She has a right to be protected, because she can't live a normal life without protection."

Reverse side titled "Women's Rights" has quotations from Herbert Spencer, John Bright, and Miss Ida M. Tarbell.

Anti Suffrage Bill. By Woman, was Eden lost, and man cursed [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
An emotional appeal from H. P. Petersen against "Woman Suffrage, that Godforsaken Evil."

By Woman, was Eden lost, and man cursed.

If you trust her, give up all hope of heaven. She cannot love, because she is too selfish. She may have a fancy, but that is flattery. Her smiles are deceit. Her vows are traced iin sand. She is a thread of candor, with a web of wiles.

Her Charity is Hypocrisy.

She is deception every way, hair, teeth, complexion, heart tongue and all. Regarding matrimony, I would not have a Suffragist in my presence, for all the world. It is the duty of the U..S. Government to drive that stubborn woman home, and compel her to take care of the home and the children, where she belongs.

Down with Woman Suffrage, that Godforsaken Evil.

Any feminine entering politics, filling offices, running street-cars and automobiles, loses her motherhood. Any man who does ot defy the Evil is babylike. Woman Suffrage is a crime against the Bible and against Nature. Any feminine, who does not take care of the home, but otherwise enters politics, belongs to jail.

The majority of men worship women as their God.

I am not going that crazy yet. I worship God in Heaven as my God. It is an unnatural idea, to have that female image on the coin. Nature has placed man to be the head of the woman in everything and run governmental affairs. What a childish idea to let woman run mans affairs.

The Bible demands that a woman must be in submission to man.

Turn to the Bible and read the following verses and be convinced:
I Tim. 2: 9-15. Ephe. 5: 22-25. Gen. 3: 16.
I Cor. 14: 34. I Cor. 11:3-16. I Peter 3: 1-6.

H. P. Petersen.

Anti-Suffage Arguments [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Handbill from the Virginia Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage articulating arguments against giving women the right to vote. The Association give several reasons why suffrage will not help working women.

The VAOWS was a group of women opposed to suffrage who organized in Richmond in 1912. They were affiliated with the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage.

Excerpts:

"Votes cannot make work when there is no work.
Votes cannot increase wages when there is no natural increase in business.

The best safeguards for the working women are found in those States where the laws have been made by men voters....

The badge of the Consumer's League has done more for the relief of the working women, than any vote could ever do.

A woman's citizenship is as great and as real as that of any man. The Anti-Suffragists stand for the true view of woman's place in the State."

MEN. You are making "The World Safe for Democracy." [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Echoing Woodrow Wilson's request for a Declaration of War in 1917, this handbill argued that women should be free from political duties just as they were free from the duty of fighting in war.

The Virginia Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, formed in Richmond, Va. in 1912. This group of women was associated with the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage.

Excerpts:

"MEN. You are making 'The World Safe for Democracy.' And also safe for women. That your Mothers, Sisters and Wives may never have to suffer as the women of Belgium and France have suffered.
ALL WOMEN THANK YOU
Men manage most of our business.
Our Government is a very big business.
Most women want men to manage our Government.
Only a few women want suffrage.
Shall these few women force all women into politics?
Women can do their bit best outside of Politics.
Our hands are full already with work which only women can do.
Women are free from the duty of fighting.
Protect us in our right to be free from political duties."

The handbill argues that woman suffrage will lead to socialism and the destruction of the Christian family and the holding of private property.

See also "The Red Behind the Yellow."

Text:

Anti-Suffrage Arguments
DANGER !
WOMAN's SUFFRAGE THE VANGUARD OF SOCIALISM

Proof. --See here--
1. What is Socialism?
Socialism is against Christian marriage.
Socialism is against the Christian family.
Socialism is against the holding of private property.
Socialism is against Christianity.
Socialism is against the Bible.

2. If you hold your marriage, your family life, your home, your religion, as sacred, dear and inviolate, to be preserved for yourself, and for your children, for all time, then work with all your might against Socialism's vanguard--Woman's Suffrage.

3. In a parade in New York City last November they openly marched together. The Woman Suffragists as the vanguard, with their yellow flags. The Socialists behind with their red flags.

4. The Socialist red flag had this inscription: "Every Socialist is a Woman Suffragist."
Does every Virginia WOman Suffragist intend to be a Socialist?

5. We hope not. The Dark and Dangerous Side of Woman Suffrage [Anti-suffrage publication]
Description
An account of the resource
A large format publication which gathers quotations from feminists and supporters of suffrage. These quotations manifest the "dark and dangerous side of woman suffrage" which is argued to be a desire for social revolution.

Subject headings for quotations include:
Downfall of the Home, Degradation of Marriage, Fatherless Children, A "Third Sex" in Politics, The Case for Woman Suffrage, The Woman's Bible, Socialism Dovetails Feminism.

From the introduction:
"Much Feminist literature is scarcely fit for publication. The following authentic quotations are selected as among the least obnoxious, to indicate, in some slight degree, the inescapable "next step" after woman suffrage.
If YOU are truly concerned with the welfare of your Family, your Children, your Country, do not make the mistake of ignoring the REAL MEANING of the demand for "Votes for Women."

Beware! Men of the South [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
An anti-suffrage handbill which attempted to sway men's opinions by making them fearful. This one asks the reader to recall the American Civil War, which had taken place during their parents' lifetime.

Text:

"BEWARE!
MEN OF THE SOUTH: Heed not the song of the suffrate siren! Seal your ears against her vocal wiles! For, no matter how sweetly she may proclaim the advantage of female franchise, --

REMEMBER that Woman Suffrage mean a re-opening of the entire Negro Suffrage question; loss of state rights; and another period of reconstruction horrors, which will introduce a set of female carpetbaggers as bad as their male prototypes of the sixties.

DO NOT JEOPARDIZE the present prosperity of your sovereign states, which was so dearly bought by the blood of your fathers and the tears of your mothers, by again raising an issue which has already been adjusted at so great a cost.

NOTHING can be gained by woman suffrage and everything may be lost!

Virginia Warns Her People Against Suffrage [broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
Reprint of an editorial from the Richmond Evening Journal, May 4, 1915.

"Virginia Warns Her People Against Suffrage
----
Twenty-nine counties would go under Negro Rule Over sixty counties in the State of Georgia
The entire State of Mississippi
-----
What of your state, your country? Isn't it about time for reflecting men and women to think--and act?
----
THE THREATENED COUNTIES
From the Richmond Evening Journal May 4, 1915--Republished by Request

Several times The Richmond Evening Journal has be asked to say which counties of Virginia have more colored than white female inhabitants. The question , of course, is in connection with the somewhat noisy demands we read of in the newspapers for "votes for women." Here is the list, from the United States census of 1910:

...It is to be remembered that the literacy test would not work in choking off the colored woman vote. The colored people are decreasing their percentage of illiteracy very fast, especially among their women and girls. The ladies of the suffrage league will hardly come forward with a property test. No safeguard would be left but the poll tax; and if colored women knew they could get votes and rule some very rich and important counties by paying $1.50 apiece, we are inclined to think most of them would be willing to go hungry, if necessary to do it.

Probably the ladies engaged in this suffrage movement are not very practical or very logical or very well informed or disposed to bother their heads with the actual facts of politics. Most of them, we surmise, hold the somewhat vague, but firmly established feminine line of reasoning that when they want something , or think they want it, they ought to have it by all principles of wisdom and justice; and are prepared always to fall back on the traditional conclusive feminine argument "because."

Senator John T. Morgan Denounces Woman Suffrage. "He Being Dead, yet Speaketh"
Description
An account of the resource
Anti-suffrage broadside that argues voting will corrupt women, and, more urgently, that increasing the number of black votes will bring about the end of white supremacy in Alabama. The words of Senator John Tyler Morgan, a staunch proponent of white supremacist ideology, and Judge William Henry Tayloe, a wealthy plantation owner, are quoted. Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper are mentioned.

Excerpts:

"White Supremacy Totters in Alabama. Men of the South, Shall It Fall? Woe Be Unto That Man who Would Betray Us. Judge W. H. Tayloe, one of Alabama's Ablest and Informed Statesmen, adds this Warning, Backed by Facts, Figures and Personal Experience."

"It is not the moral influence of woman upon the ballot that I am objecting to, and it is not to get rid of that, or to silence or destroy such influence that I oppose it, but it is the IMMORAL influence of the ballot upon woman, that I depreciate and would avoid.
I do not want to see her drawn into contact with the rude things of this world, where the delicacy of her senses and sensibilities would be constantly wounded by the attrition with bad and desperate and foul politicians and men. Such is not her function and is not her office; and if we degrade her from the high station that God has place her in to put her at the ballot-box, at political or other elections, we UNMAN ourselves and refuse to do the duties that God as assigned to us."

"Though the Supreme Court of the Nation has held that the 14th and 15th amendments were not grants of power to Congress but limitations upon the power of the States; yet it found a way to declare void the provisions of the Constitution of Oklahoma that eliminated the negro in that State as a voter. How soon will it find a way to require the States to let the negro vote? Who can tell?"

"Men of the South, the 15th Amendment but sleeps. Write your State Legislators TO-DAY to VOTE AGAINST WOMAN SUFFRAGE."

Elihu Root Warns the South [anti-suffrage broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
Broadside publishing an essay by James Callaway, editor of the Macon Telegraph and an ardent anti-suffragist.

Callaway quotes Senator William Borah:

"The cornerstone of the very fabric of our system is the right of local self-government as to who shall vote in the State, or who shall own property and lands or attend schools in a State. These are prerogatives of the State, not of the Federal government. What I am contending for is this--that which is local in its nature as I conceive this suffrage matter to be, should be permitted to remain local.

The right to vote can never, in the nature of things, under our system be other than a local question, for upon it rests the very integrity and the sovereignty of the State."

Callaway discusses "complications" with the Federal government (including the Supreme Court that had decided against disenfranchisement laws) brought about when States cannot decide who gets to vote. He declares that the white primary was important for protecting white rural women in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Belt_(U.S._region)" target="_blank" title="definition of "black belt" region of the U.S." rel="noreferrer noopener">black belt and making it safe for them to leave their homes without escort.

"Talk about emancipation of women--of freedom and a war for humanity--when the Susan B. Anthony amendment will close the public highways to our women of the rural districts, and again make them the victims of the 'terrorism,' that frightfulness which superinduced nervous debility."

Description
An account of the resource
Anti-suffrage broadside poking fun at the woman suffrage movement. Filled with puns and inside jokes, the source and precise meaning of this publication are uncertain.

Notes: The Square Deal was President Theodore Roosevelt's domestic program.

The "hatchet" refers to Carrie Nation, the radical temperance activist. The "wets" (and "drys") were the two sides on the issue of prohibition.

Some of the puns refer to foods made from corn: grits and hominy. Postum is a coffee substitute made from roasted wheat and molasses.

Paradise Lost is an epic poem written by John Milton. The poem is divided into twelve sections known as "books." A "canto" is another word for the sections into which some long poems are divided. The History of Woman Suffrage quotes a line from Paradise Lost, "All is not lost: the unconquerable will is ours."

The Masses was a richly illustrated socialist magazine, published monthly from 1911 until 1917.

Excerpts:
SUFFRAJESTS
If our husbands' socks are full of holes,
Our holier duty is at the polls....

We didn't need the "hatchet"--we've got the "Club." Hurrah!

Put your bets on the suffragettes. If you'll back them up they'll uphold the "wets." That's a stand off.

We don't believe in "force"--it isn't what its "cracked up" to be. "Hominy" is better, and somes "grit" is necessary. You see, we "acknowledge the corn." (This isn't a cereal story.); if it were we'd "postum" up and raise some electioneering dough. Our road isn't all "peaches and cream," but we hope to get our desserts some day....

We are truly yours by a large majority,
THE SUFFRAJESTS
