"Child Labor" Legislation [Anti- Child labor legislation pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet by John F. Schenck, Chairman of the Legislative Committee of the North Carolina Cotton Manufacturers' Association, arguing against legal protections for child workers in cotton mills and other Southern industries.

Excerpts:
p. 6-7 "UNTRAMMELED AND WHOLESOME COMPETITION AMONG THE MANUFACTURERS THEMSELVES HAS AMELIORATED THE CONDITIONS OF TEXTILE LABORERS, AND ADDED MORE TO THEIR WELFARE IN THE LAST TWENTY-FIVE YEARS THAN LABOR LEGISLATION CAN EVER ACCOMPLISH, BUT NOT A WHIT MORE THAN A LITTLE HASTY AND UNCALLED-FOR LEGISLATION CAN UNDO."

p.8 "The fact that this child labor movement craze may have accomplished some things, seemingly good, in other States, and has captured a large following throughout this nation, is no conclusive proof of great and wonderful merit. Nor is it sufficient reason for any respectable class of North Carolinians to surrender in despair their individuality, and tamely submit to the humiliation of being singled out from other classes, and at the instance of a foreign-born organization of agitators, be regulated by penal statutes and inspected by government spies.

This State is a sovereign and independent organization , so far as the questions at issue are concerned. It is slow to adopt foolish and tyrannical fads. It has never burned women for witchcraft nor persecuted men for their religious beliefs, as have some States who would presume to teach us humanity."

p. 12 "The doctrine that children should not labor is new; and practical men do not believe a word of it."

p. 13 "The manufacturers of this State not only profess an interest in child welfare, but the practice it. They are epecially interested in the educational idea. As evidence of it, we point to the excellent schools which are built and maintained by most of the mills for the benefit of their employees' children and espcially to the resolution of our last Spinners' Association endorsing Compulsory Education. Why not by law compel every child, whether at a factory, or on a farm, or in a city, to attend school regulary?"

"The Child Labor Amendment" to U.S. Constitution. [Anti- Child Labor Amendment pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
A report by the Committee on Industrial Relations to the New York Board of Trade and Transportation.

The pamphlet states that a child labor amendment is not needed and that “…it makes a natural and sympathetic appeal calculated to forestall criticism or disarm antagonism…” (p.1) It also outlines arguments against the amendment, including that many problems of child labor have already been addressed; the amendment impinges on parent child relationships; that child labor issues are local rather than national ones and that states have the “necessary powers” to oversee them; and that an amendment would lead to the “Communistic or Bolshevistic Nationalization of Children.” (p. 6)

The report is signed by the Committee on Industrial Relations

William McCarroll, Chairman
August Goldsmith
Edwin S. Bayer
Frank B. McCord
E. C. Miller
John G. Walber
Dudley Farrand

Adopted December 10, 1924 by New York Board of Trade and Transportation.

"The Communist Black Revolution Can and Will Be Smashed in Virginia!" [George Lincoln Rockwell campaign flyer]
Description
An account of the resource
Multi-page flyer outlining the reasons why white Democrats and Republicans of the Commonwealth of Virginia should unite and vote for White Constitutional Candidate, George Lincoln Rockwell. Rockwell, the founder and head of the American Nazi Party, was well known for his white supremacist views and his knack for political theater.

Rockwell argued that blacks would vote as a block, and that whites should do the same.

In 1965, Mills E. Godwin, Jr. won the governorship with 296,526 of the 562,789 votes cast. Rockwell received 5,730 votes, coming in fourth behind Godwin, A. Linwood Holton, Jr. and William J. Story Jr.

p. 3 "American liberty ORIGINATED in Virginia. We believe it will be SAVED in this state. We believe Virginia will be the first state in which Whites will have the intelligence and grit to ake a stand as WHITE MEN, instead of 'Democrats', 'Republicans', Catholics, Prtestants, rich men, poor men, labor, or anything else except WHITE MEN!

When black men are voting by race and destroying the liberty and traditions of White Men, it is not 'hate' or 'bigotry' to urge White Men to vote by race in self defense....

White Christian Americans came to the American wilderness and turned it into a garden of civilization. Whtie, Christian Americans fought for, founded and built Virginia with their blood, sweat and tears. Although the White Man brought the black man here as a slave, he gave that black man infinitely more than he took from him in the way of labor. He gave him a religion, he gave him a higher standard of living than that of the black man's cannibal relatives in Africa and he gave him a paternal care and love unknown in the black man's Africa, where the blacks sold their sons and daughters insto slavery and ate their brothers."

p.4 "For years, many of us were puzzled by his 'Nazism' approach.
Then we learned that he started out as a 'conservative' with Joe McCarthy, but got disgusted with the way Conservatives and White Men were completely blacked out of the press, TV, etc. or smeared and blasted as 'bigots' and fascists'.
Rockwell decided that he had to find some way of smashing his way into a hostile press so that he could at least REACH the people, and he knew he would be smeared as a 'Nazi' for standing up as a White Man. He concluded that the way to get the publicity we needed and knock the enemy's weapon of smear from his hand at the same time was to CALL himself a 'Nazi' and throw the smear right back in the faces of the liberal race-mixers.
And it worked! Rockwell has made his name and his all-out opposition to communism and race-mixing known all over the world!"

p.6 "'WELFARE' REFORM
We believe society has no duty to support those who refuse to work, when able, nor to support the hordes of parasites who abuse welfare generosity. Therefore we advocate a strong law cutting off all welfare to those who refuse appropriate paying employment, and the sterilization of all women who have had two illegitimate children, as a pre-condition to their receiving futher welfare payments."

p.7 "ANTI-COMMUNIST COMMISSION
We believe that Communism is not just an idea but that it is a criminal conspiracy, and that it is impossible for the average citizen to keep up with with [sic] the brilliant disguises and tricks of the communist criminals. The records prove that hundreds of communists have fooled their friends and even their families for years. Only professional investigators are capable of discovering and exposing these termites in our midst. Therefore, it is the determination of the White, Constitutional Party of Virginia to use every facility of the State Government, if elected, to ferret out communists and the army of their sympathizers and fellow conspirators, and, in so far as possible, prosecute them as criminals. Those who cannot be convicted, will be exposed thoroughly by every means at the disposal of the State."

"You Gotta Believe It" Your One Vote Does Count. [Crusade for Voters pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
Front and back covers of a four-page pamphlet created by the Crusade for Voters, Richmond, Va. The circular logo on the front cover shows a family of color with an American flag. Surrounding them is the slogan, "Every member of our family is a voter." Other text on the page says, "'You Gotta Believe It' Your One Vote Does Count. In Unity There is Strength."

p.4 excerpts

The black vote could be vital in many councilmanic elections, congressional elections, and even in the presidential election.

If there is one who has not seen the value of the vote, take him by the hand and get him registered. He could be your next door neighbor, your husband, your wife, a member of your church, club, or organization. Wherever you find him, get him registered!

By using your votes wisely -- voting for the right people -- impossible doors will be opened. The power of the people is at the Ballot Box -- Vote.

At page bottom:
Published by the Crusade for Voters -- a non partisan organization in the interest of increasing the Voter Registration and Education.

“Open-air” classroom at Moore Street School, 1113 W. Moore Street, Richmond, Va.
Description
An account of the resource

In the early-20th century, Europe and the U.S. saw the rise of “open air” schools intended to create healthy environments to combat tuberculosis using the principles of sanatoria. Sometimes purpose-built, and sometimes converted spaces, open air schools provided fresh air and extra nutrition for at-risk youth.

In the May 1917 issue of The Modern City, John H. Ferguson wrote about Richmond’s 16 open air schools: “Each school has a capacity of 20 children; and each one is always crowded, with a long waiting list. The children are selected from the entire public school system of the city by the school physician…Few of these children have tuberculosis even in its non-communicative forms, but they are all below par, physically, just in the right receptive condition to be fertile soil for the development of the disease.”

A Richmond Times-Dispatch notice of March 2, 1915 (p. 7) noted fundraising activities of "prominent society women" in support of the open-air schools. These women served as tearoom hostesses in the palm garden of the Jefferson Hotel. Indoor golf was a popular activity for which "two handsome silver cups" were to be awarded at the conclusion of the season.

“V is for Virginia” [broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
In 1944, military leaders struggled to maintain troop levels as casualties mounted in World War II. The Navy Women’s Reserve Act, signed into law in 1942, authorized women to become part of the group called Women Accepted for Volunteer Service—commonly known as WAVES.

By 1945, some 86,000 reservists were on duty. Women served in myriad roles during the war, running the gamut from clerks and drivers to machinists and radio operators, as well as doctors, engineers, and attorneys.

This Richmond broadside encourages women to volunteer to become part of the “all-Virginia WAVES group.”

Text:

V is for VIRGINIA, the Old Dominion State which has given so generously of her men and women in every cause of justice, righteousness, and democracy.

V is for VICTORY, which requires the energy and effort of every man and woman to bring the war to a quick and sure end.

V is for VOLUNTEER, as in Virginia Victory Volunteers, the all-Virginia WAVES group in which Virginia women are enlisting during August and September 1944 to achieve the Victory we all desire.

Investigate YOUR opportunity today!
Volunteer at any U.S. Navy Recruiting Station or Office of Naval Officer Procurement;
(5th & Cary Sts., Richmond 19, Va.)

[Letter to Members of the National Woman's Party from Alice Paul]
Description
An account of the resource
This letter from Alice Paul, National Chairman of the National Woman's Party, to members of the National Woman's Party acts as an invitation to the Woman's Party's final convention to be held in Washington, D.C., February 15 - 19, 1921. During this convention it was to be decided whether the Woman's Party "shall go out of existence or take up a new program." Furthermore, this letter requests that members donate $5 towards the cost of the convention and "so that [the Woman's Party] may go out of existence or turn to some new work, with banners flying and head aloft..."

"When we sent out our first appeal for funds in 1913 the task before us - that of changing the United States constitution so that women might vote everywhere in this country - seemed a task that held little hope of accomplishment for years to come. Now that it is accomplished, all who contributed, whether in personal service or in money, must feel that their help was not given in vain."

A 100 Per Cent Opinion! [editorial cartoon by Fred O. Seibel]
Description
An account of the resource
Editorial cartoon by Fred O. Seibel for The Knickerbocker Press. Mounted and identified as no. 929.

The cartoon was created in April 1920 after duly-elected assemblymen were expelled from the New York State Assembly. The Speaker of the Senate at the time was Republican Thaddeus C. Sweet. The socialist lawmakers were August Claessens and Louis Waldman of Manhattan; Charles Solomon of Brooklyn; and Samuel Orr and Samuel A. DeWitt of the Bronx.

Image Description:
Charles E. Hughes addresses Speaker Sweet saying, "I deeply regret the action of the Assembly in suspending five members of the Socialist Party who were duly elected. Are Socialists, unconvicted of crime, to be denied the ballot? If Socialists are permitted to vote, are they not permitted to vote for their own candidates?"

In the lower left corner "Moses Crow" says, "The people still believe in the ballot box!"

A Practical Approach to the Race Problem. Origin and Work of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation.
Description
An account of the resource
A pamphlet explaining the origin and mission of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, an organization founded in January, 1919 in Atlanta. The group sought to further "mutual understanding, peace, and good will" between the white and black communities. The group opposed lynching and mob violence, and sought to improve interracial attitudes, correct injustices and improve conditions affecting African Americans.

The CIC was a moderate group that called itself a "movement" instead of an organization. "The philosophy of the movement is not that of 'seeking to solve the race problem,' but simply that of taking the next practicable step in the direction of interracial justice and good will" (p. 4).

An account of the resource
This pamphlet written by Carrier Chapman Catt, Director of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, is advertising for a school of education for citizenship in Chicago. As described by Catt, "the aim of the school is to train women, already equipped with competent knowledge of Civil Government and Political Science, to teach new voters the ideals of American Citizenship, the processes of registering and casting a vote, the methods of making nominations and platforms, the nature of political parties, and the best ways of using a vote to get what they want, and to effect the general welfare of our people." The proposed educational program took place in Chicago's Auditorium Recital Hall from Thursday, February 19th - Wednesday[sic], February 26th under the auspices of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

A visitor teaches children about her home in India, Josephine Newbury Demonstration Kindergarten, Richmond, Va.
Description
An account of the resource
A woman in traditional Indian clothing teaches children about her home in India. She points to a globe as children gather around her and look on.

Before the Newbury Center opened in 1957, there was no education available in a school setting in Richmond or the surrounding counties for children younger than five. Preschool itself was an innovative concept then. This new purpose-built facility was created to become a model preschool for the training of teachers and the design of innovative curriculum. Professor Josephine Newbury of the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond, Va., established the school.

The professional images in this collection are the work of the Dementi Studios, one of Richmond's foremost portrait and documentary photographers. The series was made shortly after the Demonstration Kindergarten opened in 1957. They present an idealized image of childhood experience, social expectations, and gender roles, as well as the educational philosophy and methods of the time.

Woman’s Exchange January 8, 1932

The Richmond Exchange for Woman’s Work is the first woman’s shop established in Richmond which has been in continuous operation for almost fifty years. It was established in 1883 to assist ladies who, in 1883, felt their privacy would be violated and their pride tarnished if the public knew they were forced to work for money. Now we know that what a woman can do is her greatest ornament and that she always consults her dignity by doing it.

Now we have meetings where Consignors and Board Members discuss every phase of our mutual business.

There are among the consignors some of your best friends and mine.

They are from the best levels of our citizenship – much respected and self respecting women.

Without exception they are women who cannot go out into active business. Most of them have children or invalids at home who cannot do without them, or perhaps their husbands have had bad luck and cannot make ends meet. They show a notable gallantry by throwing their strength into helping their family to be self supporting upstanding citizens.

The Exchange is not a charity, - it is a philanthropy.

We simply give women a chance to help themselves.

As a shop we are obliged to meet tremendous and increasing competition.

We try to meet it by defeating it.

We try to give honest value, courteous and efficient service and the very best quality in town.

In our foods we tolerate no substitute for the best materials.

2

We have lately put on a second delivery and we send to Westhampton and to Ginter Park.

We are constantly trying to introduce novelties in all our departments.

We have many services which the public does not always realize.

We make aspics and desert to order.

We mend fine bead bags and wash and darn delicate laces and old lace curtains.

We restore antique, painted trays.

We print stationery, --just like you get from Peru, Indiana, at the same price, - and more promptly.

We take for sale some young woman’s treasured bit of glory, that must be sacrificed because her husband has lost his job, or some frail old lady’s paisley shawl or piece of family silver.

The Superintendent gives these facts about some of our present consignors

A-says that through her sales she has been able to keep her two boys at school.

B-says that her sales of cake and fancy articles enabled her to have her daughter taught the violin which she is now teaching to others.

C-says her sales have made it possible for her to take care of an invalid mother and stay at home with her.

D-says her sales have given her the means to help to keep her sister at the Blue Ridge Sanitarium.

E-could not hold her home together without the Exchange.

We have over two hundred consignors.

It is not an easy job that we do.

We have only a thirty thousand dollar endowment invested in mortgage bonds.

p.3

The consignors pay us twenty per cent commission, -which is only about two-thirds of what it costs any shop to do business.

We have a small amount from subscriptions and consignors membership tickets.

One of our greatest difficulties has been to keep our promise to pay the consignor on the first pay day after her article is sold.

This is difficult because some of our patrons are careless about paying their bills. They do not realize that we have no working capital and that their delay is a very serious embarrassment for us, and has often sent us to borrow from the bank where we have to pay interest.

We rarely beg, but we do have a constant struggle to make ends meet.

If we ever have to shut up our business it will throw about two hundred women out of employment.

We do not ask pity, - we only ask that you will try our shop.

Give us the chance we are trying to give our consignors.

Ethel Baskervill

Aloha...Hawaii!
Description
An account of the resource
Comic description: Hawaii's population is incredibly diverse. It's citizens come from many different racial, cultural, and religious backgrounds. This diversity is also reflected in the demographics of Hawaii's elected officicals. Because all of these different groups of people live in Hawaii harmoniously, Hawaii provides an example that the rest of the country can learn from.

[Image description: On a television, Batman II and Robin II are swinging through the air. Batman and Batwoman are both watching the television. Batman says to Batwoman: "It's hard to believe, Kathy, that since we retired as Batman and Batwoman, Dick Grayson has become Batman II!". Batwoman replies: "And our son has become the new Robin!".]

Public service comic published as a part of the National Social Welfare Assembly Comics Project. The Comics Project lasted from August 1949 - July 1967 and produced over 200 pages promoting citizenship and social values.

Publisher's Note: "Published as a public service in cooperation with The National Social Welfare Assembly, coordinating organization for national health, welfare and recreation agencies of the U.S."

America First [postcard]
Description
An account of the resource
Postcard advertising the sale of posters, cards, and postcards printed with this anti-war message. Part of a campaign by the National Council for Prevention of War.

Text:

America First
Not merely in matters material, but in things of the spirit.
Not merely in science, inventions, motors, and skyscrapers, but also in ideals, principles, character.
Not merely in the calm assertion of rights, but in the glad assumption of duties.
Not flaunting her strength as a giant, but bending in helpfulness over a sick and wounded world like a Good Samaritan.
Not in splendid isolation, but in courageous cooperation.
Not in pride, arrogance, and disdain of other races and peoples, but in sympathy, love, and understanding.
Not in treading again the old, worn, bloody pathway which ends inevitably in chaos and disaster, but in blazing a new trail, along which, please God, other nations will follow, into the new Jerusalem where wars shall be no more.
Some day some nation must take that path -- unless we are to lapse once again into utter barbarism -- and that honor I covet for my beloved America.
And so, in that spirit and with these hopes, I say with all my heart and soul, "AMERICA FIRST."

From a Sermon by Bishop G. Ashton Oldham, in Washington, D.C., September 7, 1924.
