A Practical Approach to the Race Problem. Origin and Work of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation.
Description
An account of the resource
A pamphlet explaining the origin and mission of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, an organization founded in January, 1919 in Atlanta. The group sought to further "mutual understanding, peace, and good will" between the white and black communities. The group opposed lynching and mob violence, and sought to improve interracial attitudes, correct injustices and improve conditions affecting African Americans.

The CIC was a moderate group that called itself a "movement" instead of an organization. "The philosophy of the movement is not that of 'seeking to solve the race problem,' but simply that of taking the next practicable step in the direction of interracial justice and good will" (p. 4).

The Opinion of Those Who Ought to Know: What Representative Negroes Say of the Interracial Movement [pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
A compilation of quotations from prominent Southern African Americans on the Commission on Interracial Cooperation. Included are Robert Russa Moton, Mary McLeod Bethune, Dr. Isaac Fisher, Dr. Alfred Lawless and others.

Founded in Atlanta in 1919, the CIC functioned as the major race reform organization in the South during the period between the world wars. While it never openly challenged segregation or advocated racial equality, it did strive for an end to racial violence and for better treatment for all classes of black men and women (Bridging the Gap: The Commission on Interracial Cooperation, 2009).

Excerpt, p.2
"Dr. R. R. Moton, Principal Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, Ala.:
'The usefulness of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation has very far exceeded anything that I expected of it. Its actual service to the cause of mutual understanding and good will between the races has abundantly justified the time, labor, money and thought that have been put into it....'"

p.3
"Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune, President National Association of Colored Women:
'No agency has contributed more to the establishment and maintenance of tolerable relations between the black and white races in the South than has the Interracial Commission....A decrease in lynchings, an improvement in educational facilities, a sympathetic study of the Negro in clleges and universities, and the appearance of influential Negro leaders before selected audiences of white people, to discuss the race question from the Negro's angle, are some of the unusual and salutary concrete results of the activities of the Interracial Commission.'"

Literacy and the Right to Vote. CLSA Reports: Information Bulletin, No. 2, May 15, 1962.
Description
An account of the resource
This information bulletin is a publication of the Commission on Law and Social Action of the American Jewish Congress. The four-page document, written by CLSA director Leo Pfeffer, discusses the topic of literacy tests and voter registration, particularly as a tool of discrimination against Black and immigrant voting. Pfeffer also considers literacy in languages other than English.

This American Jewish Congress bulletin is from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Religious Freedom and Public Affairs Project and is part of a resource files on discrimination in voting. It discusses the use of literacy tests as a means to prevent voting.

Excerpts:
p.1 Today, however there is no widespread demand that literacy tests for voters be completely abolished. What is in issue is the use of such tests to discriminate against members of minority ethnic groups. The major victims in the South are the Negroes and in New York Puerto Ricans who are literate only in Spanish and Jews literate only in Yiddish.

It is no accident that literacy tests should be so popular in the South. Their origin is to be found in the search by the Southern states to find ways to defeat the objective of the 15th Amendment which sought to secure the Negro's right to vote. Among other (e.g., poll tax, white promaries, etc.) the literacy test was hit upon as such a device. While this did effectively bar the polls to many Negroes, it had the disadvantage from the Southerner's viewpoint of also disenfranchising many whites who likewise were illiterate. To get around this, the "grandfather clause" was invented. This was a provision in the statute which exempted from the requirement of literacy anyone who was a descendant of a person who voted before 1866, in effect meaning any white person.

p.2 Typical of the administration of literacy tests in the South is the explanation given by a Louisiana registrar to an investigator of the Civil Right Commission for her practice of asking for constitutional interpretations only from Negro applicants: "Usually, I find that the white people are more intelligent along those lines and I very seldom ask them; but some of the colored people -- I can determine by the way they fill out their card that they are not intelligent in these respects."

To meet this problem the Civil Rights Commission unanimously recommended that any state law requirement of literacy as a prerequisite to the right to vote shall be deemed satisfied if the applicant shows that he completed six years of instruction in elementary school. A number of measures along this line have been introduced in Congress.

p.3 Southern spokesmen argue that these bills are unconstitutional because they interfere with states rights. They contend that if a Negro is discriminated against his only relief is to sue in the courts.
However, both the 14th and 15th Amendments specifically provide that Congress shall have the power to enforce their provisions by appropriate legislation....Enactment by Congress of the proposal recommended by the Civil Rights Commission would show that Congress realizes that it too shares responsibility in the struggle for equality.

p. 4 There is a valid reason to deny the right to vote to persons who have not yet reached the age of maturity, or to those whose limited mental capacities render them unable to handle their own affairs. There is no valid reason to deny the ballot to a person who is competent to exercise intelligent judgment in respect to the issues of the day and the candidates for public office simply because he acquired his knowledge in one rather than another language.

Southern Women and the South's Race Problem
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet published by the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, written by Robert B. Eleazer, Educational Director. The pamphlet describes commission meetings in Memphis, Tn. and Atlanta, Ga., and the responsibility felt by southern white women (primarily church women), study and then improve the lives of black women and children in their cities.

The need for day nurseries, kindergartens, clinics, playgrounds, better schools, improved housing and sanitation, safer conditions of travel, and especially the "unmeasured condemnation of lynching" are all noted.

p. 2 "The purpose of this organization and its affiliated state and local committees is to bring about better understanding, justice and fair dealing between the white and colored races. The Commission believes that the white race, as the more fortunate group and the one responsible for the Negro's presence in America, is under obligation to be both just and generous toward the latter. It believes further that the welfare and even the racial integrity of the two groups can be effectively preserved in no other way."

Popular Fallacies About Race Relations
Description
An account of the resource
A pamphlet addressing resistance from white Americans to racial integration. Written by the Educational Director of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation.

The writer, Robert B. Eleazer, refutes the "Curse of Ham" as a justification for slavery or servitude.
He also argues against popular fallacies such as "the Negro is all right in his place;" "no genuine Negro ever showed real intelligence or abillity;" "the Negro has no worthy part in American history;" "Negroes want to break down the social line between the races;" and the idea of racial superiority.

Excerpt:
"Nobody knows which is the superior race--or whether there be one. All we can say is that we differ in physical characteristics and in degree and kind of development....It behooves us all to be humble; to remember that we are all human beings, with mutual obligations of respect and good will."

Southern Opinion and Race Relations [pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
A collection of quotations from prominent Southern whites and blacks on the subject of race relations. Compiled by Robert Burns Eleazer, Education Director for the Commission on Interracial Cooperation (CIC).

Equal Suffrage and the Negro Vote [broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
This broadside was issued by the Equal Suffrage League in about 1916.

Southern suffragists were forced to respond to anti-suffrage groups who argued that if African American women gained the right to vote, white supremacy would be threatened. Although some prominent suffragists claimed that their response was borne only out of expedience, and not principle, they nonetheless employed Jim Crow arguments by emphasizing the power of the literacy test and the poll tax.

Letter from Medgar W. Evers to John M. Brooks, May 15, 1958
Description
An account of the resource
Letter from Medgar W. Evers, Field Secretary, Mississippi NAACP to John M. Brooks, Director, Voter Registration, Virginia NAACP. Dated May 15, 1958, the letter is an update on the progress of voter registration efforts in Mississippi.

Text:
Mr. Johnnie M. Brooks
Director, Registration and Voting
404 1/2 North Second Street
Richmond, Virginia

Dear Mr. Brooks:

On last night, May 14, I attended the third successful meeting of the "Crusade for Voters" in Meridian, Mississippi. It is amazing how the enthusiasm that was generated in the first two meetings has continued. It is definitely an encouraging sign. At last night's meeting there were represented persons from six of the seven presincts in Meridian, Mississippi, also representatives from two of the county supervisory districts. At this meeting we set up temporary precinct machinery and indications are that within the next two weeks the precinct organizations will be a reality.

The list of qualified Negro voters is in the process of being secured, also maps setting forth the boundaries of the various precincts. I do feel personally that in Meridian we are getting off to a very good start.

Tonight is Jackson's night. I shall report ot you on its progress later.

We had at last night's meeting approximately forty persons, more or less.

Sincerely yours,
Medgar W. Description
An account of the resource
Manuscript of article published in The Liberator on March 29, 1861 (p.51).

This article by William Lloyd Garrison is a critique of Reverend Gilbert Haven's reply to another article published in the Liberator, which criticized a letter Haven sent to the newspaper about a Thanksgiving sermon he gave and was an attack on the Garrison-Phillips brand of abolitionism. Reverse sides of nine of these manuscript pages are also written on: some of these pages seem to be part of a longer essay, while other pages are old tables of contents. Most of these reverse pages are illegible due to ink bleeding through the paper. None of the reverse pages were scanned.

Description
An account of the resource
Lucy Goode Brooks (1818–1900) and members of the Ladies Sewing Circle for Charitable Work established the Friends Asylum for Colored Orphans in 1871. These formerly enslaved women enlisted the support of the Cedar Creek Meeting Society of Friends (Quakers) to found a home for orphaned and abandoned African-American children. Brooks’s activism came from her experience losing one of her children, who was sold before the Civil War.

The Friends Asylum opened an orphanage at St. Paul and Charity streets in Jackson Ward. Today, the organization is known as FRIENDS Association for Children. It provides childcare, enrichment programs, support and educational services to low-income families.

Need of Compulsory Education in the South [NCLC Pamphlet No. 192]
Description
An account of the resource

Pamphlet by W.H. Hand, State High School Inspector, Columbia, South Carolina. Reprint from the Child Labor Bulletin, 1/1, June 1912. Includes data from the 1910 U.S. Census.

Excerpts:

p. 6 "...in a democracy where manhood suffrage practically prevails, institutional life is exposed to tremendous dangers when twelve per cent. of the voting population are unable to read the names printed on the ballots they are supposed to cast intelligently for the government of the State. Ignorance stands for narrowness, bigotry, selfishness and stagnation ; intelligence stands for liberty, liberality, tolerance, sympathy and growth. We must choose between the two."

p. 8 "The material prosperity of the present South is one of the marvels of modern times. The faith and courage with which our people rebuilt their ruined homes, reclaimed their neglected fields, bridged the rivers, tunneled the mountains, built factories and constructed railroads challenge the admiration of the civilized world. In that struggle to rise from the ashes the greatest hindrance has been our load of illiteracy, and to-day it is our heaviest burden."

p. 8 "Who are these illiterate white children of the South, and why are they not in school?"

p. 9 "Argument against the right of the State to send a chld to school is specious and superficial. Those who make such argument would not for one moment deny the right of the State to compel the parent to vaccinate his child, to compel the parent to feed and clothe his child, or to compel him to fight for his country, and to shoot him if he deserted. The State has the right to carry the law-breaking child to the reformatory or to jail to protect society. Has not the State as much right to carry the child to the schoolhouse to save him from the reformatory or the jail and to train him to benefit society?"

p. 12 "Temporizing patriots, with one ear listening to the call of duty and the other listening to the hostile rabble, declare for compulsory education when pressed to take a stand, but they usually add that the people are not quite ready for it."

p. 12 "The argument against compulsory education on account of the negro has been worn threadbare ; surely the time has come to let it drop....Is it wise or expedient to permit thousands of white boys and girls to grow up in ignorance, lest in forcing them to school we should awaken the aspirations of the negro child? Shall we remain ignorant in order to encourage the negro to remain ignorant? Is it better for white and black to remain ignorant than to have both intelligent? The only logical conclusion to such argument is that the ignorant white man can compete successfully with the ignorant negro, but that the educated white man cannot compete with the educated negro. Then what becomes of the boasted superiority of the white man? Has the white man so nearly reached the zenith of his possibilities that he cannot keep well in advance of the ambitious negro?"
(For similar arguments with regard to woman suffrage, see The Negro Vote in the South.)

Voting Status of Negroes in Virginia and Procedures and Requirements for Voting in Virginia
Description
An account of the resource
This 1944 booklet is the Virginia Voters League’s fifth annual report. The League began in 1941 and worked with the NAACP in advocating for increased African American participation at the polls. It was led by Luther P. Jackson, an historian and civil rights advocate who formed the Petersburg League of Negro Voters in 1935, which developed into the Virginia Voters League. The booklet details African American voting strength and includes instructions for voter registration.

At this time in Virginia, the payment of a poll tax for three consequtive years was a requirement for voting. The booklet notes that in 1943, the number of blacks who met the poll tax requirement was 32,504. That number increased to 41,579 in 1944. Nevertheless, those numbers represent only 9 to 11 per cent of Virginia blacks of voting age, or expressed another way, about 89 per cent of blacks were disqualified from voting in 1944.

Excerpts:

Title page: "With grant-in-aid of publication by the Virginia State Teachers Association, Virginia branches of the N.A.A.C.P., Virginia lodges of Elks, the Eureka Lodge of Norfolk, Virginia chapters of Greek letter fraternities and sororities, and the Virginia Negro Organization Society."

p. 4
Foreward
This fifth annual report of the Virginia Voters League defines the voting status of Negroes in Virginia as of May 7, 1944, the last day for paying the poll tax in order to have voted in the ensuing August primary and the November election. In order to satisfy the demand for a statement of voting requirements in Virginia and other states this handbook devotes a section to this topic also.

To all persons who seek to advance the political status of Negroes and to observe racial trends on suffrage in Virginia this publication may serve as a guide.

The compiler of this report is again deeply indebted to the 124 county and city court clerks in Virginia for furnishing the data on poll tax paying either by letter or by sending the poll tax list itself. Every county and city is included in this report because every clerk cooperated.

SLOGAN
Pay the poll tax in order to abolish the poll tax.

Education by Radio. Vol. II, No. 1. First Quarter 1941.
Description
An account of the resource
From header, "A Bulletin to Promote the Use of Radio for Educational, Cultural, and Civic Purposes"

A quarterly publication by The National Committee on Education in Radio.
Committee members:
Arthur G. Crane, Chairman
James E. Cummings
Harold G. Ingham
Bruce E. Mahan
C. S. Marsh
Charles A. Robinson, S. J.
Willis A. Sutton
H. J. Umberger, Vicechairman
L. S. Woods

The Committee was a member of the Educational Press Association of America.

The lead article is titled, "Radio Builds Democracy."

p. 23 "Radio has peculiar responsibilities to its listeners. The license of the local radio station gives it monolpoly rights to the air which belongs ot all of us, the people. In return, we expect the station to serve the public faithfully in 'public interest, convenience, and necessity,' as the law demands.
...radio has made the nation one great town meeting...We listen to news, to information, to opinion. We hear America's best speakers and thinkers argue for their views just as the city Fathers did in historic New England. The spoken word carries the warmth of the speaker's personality, conveys his sincerity and his enthusiasm which the printed page cannot convey. Radio listening insures correct reporting, because so many of us hear the broadcast. Radio with its nationwide audiences helps make democracy work."

An article C.A. Siepman titled, "<a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/2262534?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents" target="_blank" title="original article "Can Radio Educate?"" rel="noreferrer noopener">Can Radio Educate?" is excerpted from a piece in The Journal of Educational Sociology "devoted exclusively to radio problems." (p. 25-26)

A notice is included about The Library of Congress Radio Research Project begun on January 1, 1941 "to investigate possible uses of radio as a medium to make available to the American public parts of the record of American culture maintained in the Library of Congress." (p. 24)

Another note (p. 25) describes a series of radio programs about African Americans that is being prepared by the U. S. Office of Education. This almost certainly refers to the work of Ambrose Caliver, Senior Specialist in the Education of Negroes. Caliver published numerous articles and pamphlets about African American education. He also created a nine-part radio series, broadcast on NBC, called “Freedom Peoples.” "Freedom Peoples" broke new ground as the first substantial program in mass media that focused on African American life and history. The program featured guest appearances from Paul Robeson, Joe Louis, and A. Philip Randolph.

Description
An account of the resource
Informational pamphlet about the National Health Circle for Colored People, Inc.

The National Health Circle for Colored People developed out of the Circle for Negro Relief, an organization that helped meet the needs for black soldiers and their families during World War I. In 1919 the Circle was reorganized as a peace time program for the promotion of public health work in African American communities. Belle Davis, a graduate of Fisk University, served as the Circle's executive secretary. Davis made over 25,000 visits in nine years to promote public health and welfare and raise awareness of the needs of black communities.

The National Health Circle for Colored People also worked to recruit, educate and place African American public health nurses. They raised money for scholarship loans and at one time provided office space for the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses.

This pamphlet list six "Objects of the Organization" and speaks to public health conditions, their causes, and the remedy. An appeal to both white and black citizens for membership is followed by endorsements from Theodore Roosevelt, R. R. Moton, Haven Emerson, M.D., and C. Everit Macy.

Dr. Will W. Alexander of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation is listed as a member of the Board of Directors.

The Circle notes that "tuberculosis kills eleven times as many Negro boys between the ages of ten and fourteen as white boys, and about eight times as many colored girls as white girls." Life expectancy of blacks was less than that of whites, and as many as 96 out of every 1,000 African American babies died before their first birthday.

Pictured on the front cover are two Scholarship Nurses of the Circle, Alice Alvenia Sightler, R.N., graduate of Mercy Hospital, Philadelphia (left) and Agnes Boozer, R.N., graduate of Harlem Hospital School of Nursing (right).

Description
An account of the resource
Anti-busing, anti-integration, anti-government flyer created by the National Socialist White Peoples Party (previously named the American Nazi Party) of Arlington, Va.

Using violent antisemitic and racist speech, this flyer paints a dire picture of an integrated America if white people don't "get away from the old two-party windle and get behind a REAL political party that represents THEIR interests!"

While undated, this flyer is believed to date to around 1972 during the school busing conflicts in Virginia.

Girls Home, 502 W. Clay Street, Richmond, Va. [brochure]
Description
An account of the resource

This informational brochure describes "interesting facts about the object, origin and progress" of a working-girls' home for self-supporting African American women in Richmond, Va. The project, described as a technical training school, was established in 1919 as a project of the National Protective League for Negro Girls and the Richmond Neighborhood Association. Ora Brown Stokes (Perry), a social activist, was a leader in both organizations.

p.1 "Our Club Home. An 'Inspiration Point' for Self-Supporting Women and Girls for 'These are they that maintain the fabric of the world, and without them is no city builded.'"

From p. 2 "The object of the Girls' Home is to provide and maintain a home which will solve the problem of the colored woman and girl of good character who comes to Richmond for the purpose of advancement, often without relatives, friends, or money; to surround them with Christian influences, to elevate the standard of employment, to provide a social center for women and girls."

"The Home is managed by a splendid board with Mrs. Artena J. Miller as the efficient chairman. Mrs. Alice Holmes Watkins is the splendid House mother."

"Our President, who is the Probation officer for women and girls, investigated the cause for the downfall of so many girls and women who came to the city. The cause was found to be that upon entereing the city they ofttimes found no one to direct them rightly and they were often sent by strangers to questionable places for room and board and the path downward was entered before they even knew it."

"It is the only one of its kind which is being carried on by women of the race. The white friends has assisted largely by financial contributions and words of encouragement....Mrs. Ora Brown Stokes, President."

The song "The Clarion Call" composed by Ora B. Stokes (September 5, 1915) and dedicated to Pocahontas Camp Fire Girls, Richmond, Va. is printed on the back of this brochure. The song was to be sung to the tune of "Loyalty to Christ" [From Over Hill and Plain] composed by Flora Hamilton Cassel.

Along with Ora Brown Stokes (President), other officers of the Richmond Neighborhood Association included Mrs. Harriet E. Thompson, Mrs. Maggie M. Hill, Mrs. Rosa Sutton Caffee, Miss Lucy, A. Peters, Mrs. Alice H. Kersey, Mrs. T. Everett Johnson.

Officers of the National Protective League for Negro Girls include Mrs. Ora Brown Stokes (Richmond), Mrs. W. T. B. Williams (Hampton), Miss Lillian Coleman (Fredericksburg), Miss Martha Fowlkes (Richmond), Miss Ruth Morris (Richmond), and Mrs. Theresa J. Bond, Piedmont Sanatorium
Description
An account of the resource
Bond, issued in 1917 in return for a donationof $1.00 toward the construction of Piedmont Sanatorium.

The Piedmont Sanatorium was established in Burkeville, Virginia, in June, 1918. At that time, tuberculosis was one of the leading causes of death for African Americans, but segregated health care in Virginia dictated that blacks could receive treatment in only two facilities—Central State Hospital (a mental health facility) and the state penitentiary.

The Negro Organization Society initiated discussions with the State Board of Health, particularly Agnes D. Randolph, the Director of the Bureau of Tuberculosis Education. Randolph was instrumental in convincing the state government to establish a facility for African Americans.

The Negro Organization Society continued to be heavily involved with the issue, from raising public awareness to donating funds to improve the facility. Piedmont Sanatorium had closed by 1965, when black patients began to be sent to Blue Ridge Sanatorium, near Charlottesville.

Excerpt:
"This Bond is issued for the purpose of cooperation with the Negro Organization Society to erect and to equip one Building to be used for the patients and to include rooms for visiting Doctors who shall from time to time be invited for study to the Sanatorium. The purchaser hereby receives a share in the benefit and happiness to be derived."

Description
An account of the resource
A newsletter of the Commission for Interracial Cooperation addressed to the Virginia State Committee members in the area of Richmond, Va.

Excerpts:

p.1 The one thing important is for the leaders of both races to be close enough to each other to know the needs, and, as far as possible, the thoughts, feelings and attitudes of each race toward the other. I see nothing constructive in saying "We have the best Negroes (or white folks) in the world" unless that is based upon first-hand knowledge of the actual conditions; surface impressions may not be trustworthy.

I could recite number of illustrations where trusted leaders of both races are patiently, quietly and courageously facing these situations where there may be injustice and discrimination and are trying to change the attitude out of which unsatisfactory conditions grow, thus producing a by-product of understanding and mutual trust upon which all permanent adjustments must rest.

p.2 Have there been any lynchings in your section or in your state thus far in 1928? If so give particulars.

During the past few years, the Commission, among many other constructive services, has conducted a vigorous campaign agaist the practice of lynching, all too prevalent in most American states. During three of the past four years, the number of lynchings has reached the low annual mark of 16, against a former forty-year average of more than 100. Certainly the Commission would not lay claim to all the credit for this progress; many factors have contributed, not the least of which is the press, which has created a more enlightened public opinion.

SCLC Crusade for the Vote: To Double the Negro Vote in the South [Southern Christian Leadership Conference brochure]
Description
An account of the resource
Brochure distributed by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) which describes and promotes the "Crusade for the Ballot. To Double the Negro Vote in the South." The campaign aimed to double the number of registered Black voters in the South and to educate and stimulate these citizens to exercise the vote.

Page 3 of the brochure states that this goal will be achieved by educating and stimulating Black citizens to vote. Organizing communities, bipartisanship, and non-violence.

SCLC leadership at this time included Martin Luther King, Jr. President, Wyatt Tee Walker, Executive Director, and Atty. I. M. Augustine, General Counsel.

The pamphlet is from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Religious Freedom and Public Affairs Project, and is part of a resource file on discrimination in voting. It discusses voter suppression tactics and lists ways to counter them and increase voter registration and participation.

Excerpts:

p. 2
THE FACTS
(1) Over 5 million Negros of voting age live in the South.
(2) Only 25% of adult Negroes vote compared with 60% white adults.
(3) Purges of voter lists, "slowdowns" by registrars, opening the registration office only one of two days a month and at hours that are not helpful for working people; and
(4) Open intimidation by some plantation bosses and many local officials, all play a part in discouraging the Negro Citizen from becoming a registered voter.

As a result, "Government by consent of the governed," upon which our nation was founded in 1776, is a goal still to be made a reality in most of the South today.

Most of the present crop of Southern Senators and Congressmen will oppose and fillibuster all legislation designed to protect the voting rights of citizens of this region.

YOU CAN CHANGE THIS SITUATION
Despite these obstacles Negro citizens are struggling daily to double the number of voters and to obtain representation in government.
Even the most die-hard segregationist in public office can be made to respect voting power. Furthermore, we know there are many liberal white citizens in the South who count on the Negro votes to increase enough for liberal voice to be heard in the government.
The whole nation will benefit from an enlarged Negro vote in the South. This area of our country CAN elect men and women of good will and a sense of justice to Congress and to local state legislatures.
Let all who believe in Freedom and Human Dignity join in this great Crusade for The Ballot Now!!

p. 3 In Unity There Is Strength. No narrow partisan interest must be allowed to divide us. In reaching a cross section of the Negro community, the Crusade will move across party lines. It is for the good of the local community that all civic, church, fraternal and other organizations

p. 4
"The goal of the Freedom Movement in the South can be summed up in 3 words: All, Here, and Now
We want all of our rights as citizens (not just some rights);
We want them here, in the Deep South, and
We want them now"
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

When you have finished reading this, please pass it on to a member of the family, a neighbor or a friend.

Full transcript and other related items via University of Minnesota Libraries, Social Welfare History Archives.
