The Negro Vote in the South. A Southern Woman's Viewpoint [suffrage flyer]
Description
An account of the resource
NWSA flyer containing an essay by Mrs. Guilford Dudley of Nashville, TN. Mrs. Dudley addresses the fear among white Southern Congressmen that if all women are given the vote through a Federal Suffrage Amendment, the increase in black voting power will be detrimental to the nation. Dudley notes the success of "educational tests" that limit black voter registration.

For similar arguments with regard to compulsory education, see "Need of Compulsory Education in the South."

The Southern Frontier, vol. 1, no. 10
Description
An account of the resource
Published by Commission on Interracial Cooperation (CIC), The Southern Frontier was a monthly newsletter, first issued in January, 1940. Aiming to share the stories overlooked by traditional newspapers, the newsletter published stories of social progress, as well as stories of racial injustices faced by African Americans across the American South.

As described by the then President of the CIC Howard W. Odum, the name The Southern Frontier alludes to the need for even greater pioneering and progress in the social and cultural frontiers, the American South being the most turbulent field in reference to race relations and progress at the time.

Vol. 1, No. 10 contains contributions by:
N.C. Newbold
R. B. Eleazer

Selected articles are:
“Commission Interracial Cooperation Holds Annual Meeting” – A recap of the annual meeting of the CIC, featuring highlights of the speech by President Odum, resolutions passed, new members elected, and the results of officer and director elections.

"South Carolina Interracial Committee Has Klan Problem" -- describes the South Carolina Committee's efforts to condemn the KKK's acts of intimidation and physical violence, and to help defeat Klan members running for elected office.

Equal Suffrage League of Virginia float depicting the Barge of State with Victory at the prow.

This photograph was taken at the Thrift Day Parade held the afternoon of Saturday, March 23, 1918 in Richmond, VA. According to newspaper reports, over 20,000 people participated and over 100 floats were present.

This photograph was published in the April 20, 1918 issue of The Woman Citizen. Adele Clark and Nora Houston, Richmond art teachers and leaders in the Equal Suffrage League of Virginia (ESL), decorated the float which was sponsored by the Richmond league of the ESL.

The “boat” was occupied by children and others in costumes representing “the extensive war service work being done by the League in conservation, Red Cross, Liberty Loan and food production” (Woman Citizen, 414).

The location of this image is the 100 block of the N. 4th St. directly across the street from the ESL headquarters. Women's Work and War
Description
An account of the resource
Women's Work and War: A Bulletin of Facts Concerning the Employment of Women to Meet the Deficit of Man Power in Our National Industrial Emergency. Published by the National Women's Trade Union League.

p.1 "The working women are eager to help win the war. To make their help effective is a problem which must be generally discussed. Therefore this Bulletin."

"The United States is now calling into action two armies. The first is an army of men, trained and equipped for service. It carries with it all the splendid panoply of war.

The second is a woman's army. It is neither trained nor equipped, nor conscious of its unity. Yet to give good service it must be all those things.

The women's army is as necessary to us at this time as the men's army, it will feed and clothe and munition the men in the trenches. As more men are called to the training camps women will step into their places in the shops, thus constantly increasing the army of women upon whose shoulders will rest the whole economic burden of this country."

p.4 The NWTUL advocated for reasonable standards for women workers on Government contracts. This pamphlet outlines those standards as follows:

"Adult labor.
Wages--
1. The highest rate prevailing in the industry effected.
2. Equal pay for equal work.
3. Trades without wage standards to be handled by an adjustment committee.
4. Adjustment committee to handle all wage questions and to keep all wages in fair proportion to increasing cost of living.
The Eight Hour Day.
One day rest in seven.
Prohibition of night work for women.
Standards of sanitation and fire protection.
Protection against over-fatigue and industrial diseases.
Prohibition of tenement house labor.
Exemption from call into industry of women whose small children need their care.
Exemption from call into industry of women two months before and after child birth."

Note postmark promoting food conservation during World War I.
"Food will win the war. Don't waste it."

Fall In! [editorial cartoon by Fred O. Seibel]
Description
An account of the resource
Editorial cartoon by Fred O. Seibel for The Knickerbocker Press. Mounted and identified as no. 1312.

The cartoon relates to the War Adjusted Compensation Act (Bonus Act) of May 19, 1924. This act granted a benefit (bonus) to veterans of military service during World War I. President Calvin Coolidge vetoed the act, but his veto was overridden by Congress.

The Act provided for deferred payments in the form of certificates to most veterans. The certificates were to be redeemed in 1945. With the advent of the Great Depression, a large number of veterans would seek immediate cash redemption of these certificates. A group of these veterans and supporters, known as the Bonus Army, would gather in Washington, D.C. in 1932.

Image Description: An "Ex-service man" holding an empty mess kit stands outside a Bonus Mess Tent where other veterans are lining up. The Ex-service man says, "There's that mess call again! Wonder if they will fool us this time? I'm getting pretty blamed hungry!"

Seibel's "Moses Crow," dressed in uniform says, "When do we eat?"

Soldier Attention: A Private Word with You
Description
An account of the resource
World War I pamphlet warning soldiers of the effect of sexually transmitted diseases.

Transcription:

"Soldier, you responded when your country called. You have put your strength, your manhood and your hope into this war. You want to be a clean-cut fighting-man. You want ours to be the most efficient army in the world. You want the army to win.

You cannot be a clean-cut fighting-man, you cannot do your part in making a great army and you cannot do your best toward winning the war unless you avoid immoral women. For from these women comes disease. From disease come inefficiency. From inefficiency comes disaster.

It is unpatriotic to be immoral. A good soldier will not hazard his physical fitness and his moral cleaness by association with bad women. every man who is moral adds to the strength of the army. Every man who is immoral invites the ruin of the army and the death of himself and his comrades-in-arms.

Europe had dound this out. Our associates in the great war for democracy-French,British,Belgian, Russian and the rest--have all seen that the disabilityfrom venereal disease has weakened their armies and has been one of the causes that have postponed final victory. If you want to save America from like experience--if you want victory to come quickly and certainly--you can at least do you share toward keeping the army morally clean and morally straight.

Sexual intercourse is not necessary to good health. Self control is. Whihc will you exhibit--the spirit of a man, strong and self-contained, or the spirit of your worst self?

We ask you to follow honestly and literally the health regulations of the army.

We ask you to keep in touch with your home-folks and to remember that you are fighting for the clean things of life--for home, for sweetheart, for sister and for mother.

We ask you to engage only in such amusements as will keep your body in good condition, remembering that clean athletics and manly sport will help prepare you to meet the enemy.

We ask you to guard your own conduet while on furlough and to help the other fellow keep straight.

We ask you to remember what your body means to your country and your flag: Care for it as a precious possession, dedicated to a worthy cause without reproach or strain.

We ask you to remember that you represent the honor, the character and the cleanness of America: By your acts your nation will be judged.

This little message is written you from a conference held in the office of the Governor of Virginia and it is signed by friends.

When They Come Home
Description
An account of the resource
This pamphlet is specifically designed to educate the spouses, significant others, and family members of World War I soldiers on the topic of venereal disease.

Excerpts:

Page 2, paragraph 2 : "When men and girls are changing their occupations and ways of life, when war disciplines are being removed and when spirits are buoyant, the greatest temptations to self indulge amid dangerous pleasures occur. Cities and towns throughout the country face now the most important crisis -- the biggest emergency yet encountered in the fight against veneral disease.

WHAT THE WAR HAS TAUGHT US

'Our ignorance and failure in handling the problem of veneral diseases constitute the greatest crime of American civilization. This is the clearest lesson of the war'. "

Page 4, paragraph 2 : "Now the returning soldiers, who have been given intelligent protection and wholesome recreation, are to be turned back to the civil communities. The federal government must, of nessecity, in the next few months, give up its wartime control. These men are your responsibility now."

Page 8, paragraph 3 : "With war's final end, many war buildings, war jobs, and institutions will go to the scrap heap. But every item in the program of veneral disease control is as necessary to successful peace as to successful war. Don't scrap your patriotism and community spirit in this manner. There should be no peace for prostitution, no truce for the 'tenderloin', no armistice with veneral disease. Make your blows knockouts against vice. The soldiers, when they come home from the trenches, will be the first to join you in your fight."

MEN. You are making "The World Safe for Democracy." [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Echoing Woodrow Wilson's request for a Declaration of War in 1917, this handbill argued that women should be free from political duties just as they were free from the duty of fighting in war.

The Virginia Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage, formed in Richmond, Va. in 1912. This group of women was associated with the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage.

Excerpts:

"MEN. You are making 'The World Safe for Democracy.' And also safe for women. That your Mothers, Sisters and Wives may never have to suffer as the women of Belgium and France have suffered.
ALL WOMEN THANK YOU
Men manage most of our business.
Our Government is a very big business.
Most women want men to manage our Government.
Only a few women want suffrage.
Shall these few women force all women into politics?
Women can do their bit best outside of Politics.
Our hands are full already with work which only women can do.
Women are free from the duty of fighting.
Protect us in our right to be free from political duties."
