No Forced Labor Camps for American Youth! [American Student Union pamphlet]
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet published by the American Student Union, a national left-wing organization of college students active in the 1930s. The group consisted of both communists and socialists, who argued over the group's stance on pacificism in the face of Hitler's rise to power and events in Europe.

The pamphlet advocates for the American Youth Act, a youth assistance bill proposed by the American Youth Congress as an alternative to the National Youth Administration. The AYA was never able to get out of committee on Capitol Hill, however, as it was too costly.

"Foreward: This little pamphlet is published by the American Student Union as a warning to undergraduates to act quickly in defense of democratic education and peace, lest the enemies of our liberties succeed in their plan to regiment youth and precipitate us again into foreign war. The facts it reveals are but a partial presentation, due to space limitations, of available information on the subject. The questions it asks are vital to the welfare of every student. The campaign it proposes to launch deserves the support of every American student."

An account of the resource
Published by Commission on Interracial Cooperation (CIC), The Southern Frontier was a monthly newsletter, first issued in January, 1940. Aiming to share the stories overlooked by traditional newspapers, the newsletter published stories of social progress, as well as stories of racial injustices faced by African Americans across the American South.

As described by the then President of the CIC Howard W. A. Newell
Kathleen Mallory
S. L. Timmons

Selected articles are:

"Redcaps Win Wage Suit $88,500 Award to 41" -- an article about a suit brought by the Brotherhood of Railway and Steamship Clerks to determine whether tips should be included in wages.

“Editor Fined For Speeding Beaten and Jailed” – An article about Houston, Texas lawyer and newspaper editor Carter Wesley, pulled over for speeding by two highway patrolmen, beaten for “waving at white folks on the highway,” and subsequently jailed. He’d be charged with resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, and speeding, the first two charges dismissed for lack of jurisdiction and evidence.

“They Handled Dynamite” – An article about two groups of Southern Methodist women, one white and one black, joining together to address the large disparity in living conditions between white southerners and black southerners.

An article on p. 2 describes the role of church women in passage of an act by Richmond, Va. City Council to provide a twelve-acre playground for African Americans. The church women united with the Community Recreation Association which had worked for fifteen years to secure a swimming pool for blacks.

Do You Know Where Your Clothes Are Washed? A Bulletin on Laundry Conditions in New York City
Description
An account of the resource
Do You Know Where Your Clothes Are Washed? A Bulletin on Laundry Conditions in New York City. Issued by The Consumers' League of the City of New York. This bulletin addresses the physical conditions, hours, and wages of laundries in New York City.

"When Maggie Corbett, a fifteen year old girl, testified before the State Board of Mediation and Arbitration that she had worked in a public laundry for more than two years, and that she had often worked 14 or 15 hours in one day in a hot, steam-filled room, every housewife who read the newspapers was horrified that such a state of affairs could exist in an industry so closely connected with her own household economy."

What Have Women Done With the Vote?
Description
An account of the resource
This article written by George Creel originally appeared in the March 1914 issue of Century Magazine and was reprinted in pamphlet form by the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Creel's article provides an analysis of the consequences of women being granted the right to vote, including the social, political, and economic implications.

"The opponents of equal suffrage never tire of declaring that woman's place is the home. I agree with them most heartily. It is because of the home that I want women to have the vote... I have always thought, and still think that a government entirely by men is as stupid as a government entirely by women would be. There are as many home features in municipal or state administration as business features...."

Description
An account of the resource
Orie Latham Hatcher, Ph.D. was head of the Bureau of Vocations in Virginia, a group founded in 1915.

Dr. Hatcher and the work of the Bureau of Vocations was described in <a href="https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.c2572263&view=2up&seq=150" target="_blank" title="read "The Virginia Teacher" through HathiTrust.org" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Virginia Teacher (vol. 2, no. 5, p. 128):

"She is the head of a unique institution, the Bureau of Vocation of Virginia, which was founded six years ago in Richmond, under her inspiration. This institution exerts a strong educational influence. It inspires women first, to the best general education possible, then to adequate special training in some one field of work wisely chosen."

Occupations for Women contains a preliminary essay written by Hatcher entitled "Women Who Work," in which Hatcher presents the various points of view related to women working outside the home at different stages of life. Towards the end of the essay, Hatcher describes "Signs of Progress" and "Handicaps to Progress."

Excerpts from that essay, and the introduction to the section of the book dealing with Social Work, are presented here.

Child Labor in Virginia. NCLC Pamphlet No. 171
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet by Alexander Jeffrey McKelway, Secretary for the Southern States, National Child Labor Committee. With photographs by Lewis W. Hine, staff photographer for the NCLC.

Lewis Hine made a photographic investigation of child labor in Virginia in May and June of 1911. This pamphlet discusses the extent of child labor in the state where children were employed in cotton, silk and knitting mills, coal mines, cigarette factories, glass factories, shoe factories, and as newsboys, messenger boys, and actors on stage.

Excerpts:

p.3-4 "The cotton mills have often put themselves forward as patrons of education. The figures of the Federal Bureau of Labor do not bear out this claim. The Census shows that 9 per cent. of the white children ten to fourteen years of age throughout the state are illiterate. In the cotton mills 70 per cent. of the children under fourteen were found to be illiterate by the agents of the Bureau of Labor, a greater percentage than are to be found, even in the cotton mill families of any other state, north or south."

p.5 "...there was no necessity for the labor of these children under fourteen; while it is admitted by all philanthropic agencies that even if there were in individual cases such need, the last expedient that should be adopted is the putting of the burden of family support upon the shoulders of the immature child."

p. 9 "It is true, therefore, that a large majority of the industries of Virginia do not employ children under fourteen, and these establishments should be protected from the competition of the child-employing industries, which are here mentioned and illustrated."

Women's Work and War
Description
An account of the resource
Women's Work and War: A Bulletin of Facts Concerning the Employment of Women to Meet the Deficit of Man Power in Our National Industrial Emergency. Published by the National Women's Trade Union League.

p.1 "The working women are eager to help win the war. To make their help effective is a problem which must be generally discussed. Therefore this Bulletin."

"The United States is now calling into action two armies. The first is an army of men, trained and equipped for service. It carries with it all the splendid panoply of war.

The second is a woman's army. It is neither trained nor equipped, nor conscious of its unity. Yet to give good service it must be all those things.

The women's army is as necessary to us at this time as the men's army, it will feed and clothe and munition the men in the trenches. As more men are called to the training camps women will step into their places in the shops, thus constantly increasing the army of women upon whose shoulders will rest the whole economic burden of this country."

p.4 The NWTUL advocated for reasonable standards for women workers on Government contracts. This pamphlet outlines those standards as follows:

"Adult labor.
Wages--
1. The highest rate prevailing in the industry effected.
2. Equal pay for equal work.
3. Trades without wage standards to be handled by an adjustment committee.
4. Adjustment committee to handle all wage questions and to keep all wages in fair proportion to increasing cost of living.
The Eight Hour Day.
One day rest in seven.
Prohibition of night work for women.
Standards of sanitation and fire protection.
Protection against over-fatigue and industrial diseases.
Prohibition of tenement house labor.
Exemption from call into industry of women whose small children need their care.
Exemption from call into industry of women two months before and after child birth."

Note postmark promoting food conservation during World War I.
"Food will win the war. Don't waste it."

Eight and one-half Million Women Workers!
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet promoting the work of the National Women's Trade Union League of America. The NWTULA advocates for better working conditions, hours, and wages for women and girls.

Cover illustration of a young female factory worker. Her apron and the smoke from factory smokestacks behind her are caught by the wind. Illustration by Winifred Bromhall, best known for her work as a children's book artist.

Excerpts:

p. 2 "According to the 1920 census, eight and one-half million women in the United States, 10 years of age and over, earn their own living and contribute to the support of others. This represents a half-million increase over 1910....

One out of every 4 women wage-earners is in one of the manufacturing and mechanical industries."

p. 3 "A Way Out? Trade union organization--more and more of it--with its machinery for the collective merchandising of the day's work.

Voices here and there, raised in individual protest, are not heard above the din of the modern industrial machine. But the collective voice of millions of women who know for themselves the toll exacted for unnatural strain will compel a hearing for their industrial ills."

Girls Home, 502 W. Clay Street, Richmond, Va. [brochure]
Description
An account of the resource

This informational brochure describes "interesting facts about the object, origin and progress" of a working-girls' home for self-supporting African American women in Richmond, Va. The project, described as a technical training school, was established in 1919 as a project of the National Protective League for Negro Girls and the Richmond Neighborhood Association. Ora Brown Stokes (Perry), a social activist, was a leader in both organizations.

p.1 "Our Club Home. An 'Inspiration Point' for Self-Supporting Women and Girls for 'These are they that maintain the fabric of the world, and without them is no city builded.'"

From p. 2 "The object of the Girls' Home is to provide and maintain a home which will solve the problem of the colored woman and girl of good character who comes to Richmond for the purpose of advancement, often without relatives, friends, or money; to surround them with Christian influences, to elevate the standard of employment, to provide a social center for women and girls."

"The Home is managed by a splendid board with Mrs. Artena J. Miller as the efficient chairman. Mrs. Alice Holmes Watkins is the splendid House mother."

"Our President, who is the Probation officer for women and girls, investigated the cause for the downfall of so many girls and women who came to the city. The cause was found to be that upon entereing the city they ofttimes found no one to direct them rightly and they were often sent by strangers to questionable places for room and board and the path downward was entered before they even knew it."

"It is the only one of its kind which is being carried on by women of the race. The white friends has assisted largely by financial contributions and words of encouragement....Mrs. Ora Brown Stokes, President."

The song "The Clarion Call" composed by Ora B. Stokes (September 5, 1915) and dedicated to Pocahontas Camp Fire Girls, Richmond, Va. is printed on the back of this brochure. The song was to be sung to the tune of "Loyalty to Christ" [From Over Hill and Plain] composed by Flora Hamilton Cassel.

Along with Ora Brown Stokes (President), other officers of the Richmond Neighborhood Association included Mrs. Harriet E. Thompson, Mrs. Maggie M. Hill, Mrs. Rosa Sutton Caffee, Miss Lucy, A. Peters, Mrs. Alice H. Kersey, Mrs. T. Everett Johnson.

Officers of the National Protective League for Negro Girls include Mrs. Ora Brown Stokes (Richmond), Mrs. W. T. B. Williams (Hampton), Miss Lillian Coleman (Fredericksburg), Miss Martha Fowlkes (Richmond), Miss Ruth Morris (Richmond), and Mrs. Theresa J. Diamond (Fredericksburg).

This home is sometimes referred to as the Home for Working Girls.
