An account of the resource
A brief historical overview of the relationship between unionism and working women in Boston. This approach attempts to identify the causes for the wage and employment disparities of working women in comparison to working men, and therefore suggesting this inequality as the central reason for Boston’s working women link with unionism.

Additionally, the booklet touches upon a handful of various labor unions organized exclusively by working women that lived and operated within the city of Boston during the turn of the century.

These three pages represent an excerpt of a larger work. Use of Mexican Workers Does Not Depress Farm Wages
Description
An account of the resource
This article compares the hourly wages of farm workers state-by-state, along with the number of Mexican workers employed in 1962.

The document's author states, "The current average hourly farm wage of the 21 States in which Mexican workers were used in 1962 is $1.13 per hour. The average of the 27 States in which no Mexican nationals were used in 1962 is $1.04 per hour...."

"One conclusion, however is obvious; that factors other than employment of Mexican nationals dominate in the establishment of farm wage rates and if there is any correlation whatever between the employment of Mexican nationals, or the number employed, and the level of farm wages in the various States, it is that farm wages tend to be higher in States where substantial numbers of Mexican workers are employed."

Anti-Suffage Arguments [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
Handbill from the Virginia Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage articulating arguments against giving women the right to vote. The Association give several reasons why suffrage will not help working women.

The VAOWS was a group of women opposed to suffrage who organized in Richmond in 1912. They were affiliated with the National Association Opposed to Woman Suffrage.

Excerpts:

"Votes cannot make work when there is no work.
Votes cannot increase wages when there is no natural increase in business.

The best safeguards for the working women are found in those States where the laws have been made by men voters....

The badge of the Consumer's League has done more for the relief of the working women, than any vote could ever do.

A woman's citizenship is as great and as real as that of any man. The Anti-Suffragists stand for the true view of woman's place in the State."

The Closing of Occupations To Women
Description
An account of the resource
This leaflet was created by the Woman's Party to describe the important role the Woman's Party in campaigning for industrial equality as evidenced by increasing legislation restricting the industrial opportunities of women.

"The effort to bar women from political equality with men was of little consequence compared to the present growing effort to keep them from industrial equality. No part of the Woman's Party equality program is so important, we believe, and so far-reaching in its effect as its demand for economic equality."

An Amendment to the Constitution is Needed to Give the United States Power to Safeguard the Child Life of the Nation
Description
An account of the resource
Pamphlet advocating for the Child Labor Amendment, passed in 1924, but never ratified.

Cover cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper cartoonist John T. McCutcheon.

[Image description] Two child laborers operate machinery. Above them is a cloud showing that they are daydreaming about frolicking outside with a dog. Beneath the cloud are the words "Lost Childhood". A rich older man in a suit looks at the children while rubbing his hands together greedily. The text below indicates that this man represents the "Employer of Child Labor". Above him is a cloud showing that he is daydreaming about sitting in the back of a large, expensive automobile that is parked in front of a mansion. Beneath the cloud are the words "Financial Gains". At the bottom of the cartoon is text that says "What child labor and its employer think about".

Text from back of pamphlet:

A federal minimum will give to American Children all the advantages of our federal form of government.
Every state may wish to give its children greater protection than a national minimum would provide.
Is any state willing to give them less?

------

The following organizations issue this appeal for the passage of a Children's Amendment by the next Congress:
American Federation of Labor
Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America
General Federation of Women's Clubs
Girls Friendly Society in America
National Child Labor Committee
National Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Associations
National Consumers' League
National Council of Jewish Women
National Council of Women, Inc.
National Education Association
National Federation of Teachers
National Federation of Businesses and Professional Women's Clubs
National League of Women Voters
National Woman's Christian Temperance Union
National Women's Trade Union League
Service Star Legion
Young Woman's Christian Association.

Singing Solidarity Forever, Passaic County, 1926
Description
An account of the resource
Strikers raise their fists and sing as they march down a street during the Passaic Textile Strike, 1926. One striker wears a military uniform.

Photograph is marked for cropping.

The I.W.W. song "Solidarity Forever" was sung to the tune of "John Brown's Body." The words, written by Ralph Chaplin, begin,

When the Union's inspiration through the worker's blood shall run,
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun;
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one?
But the Union makes us strong.

Chorus:
Solidarity forever, solidarity forever,
Solidarity forever, for the union makes us strong.
