Religious and Social Aspect of the Suffrage Movement
Description
An account of the resource
Essay, published in pamphlet form, which sets forth the religious and social foundations of the woman suffrage movement. The essay begins:

Page 1: "There is in the suffrage movement a religious element, a deep strain of spirituality and altruism, which gives it a peculiar moral significance, and fully justifies faith in its ultimate vindication."

Page 4: "The Christian world is awakening as never before to its social duties. Followers of Christ are becomming more keenly alive to the necessity for social service if His teachings are really to regenerate and redeem mankind. The terms "social betterment" and "social uplift" are daily becoming more familiar."

Page 14: "Under our present chaotic and unequal state of affairs, it is the duty of each individual to earnestly seek the causes and resulting in the flagrant abuses and wrongs going on about us, and to expend every effort in their re-adjustment. This should be as fully a part of our religion as the performance of any other obligation, and it is with just such a spirit that women all over the world have thrown heart and soul into the suffrage cause, believing that it is one of the forst steps towards a more equitable arrangement of society."

Page 19: "Let us awake to the needs of the world about us, to a sense of our individual responsibility in meeting those needs, and to our opportunities for serving God and man."

Pamphlet printed by Caplon Printing Co., Richmond, Virginia

Anti Suffrage Bill. By Woman, was Eden lost, and man cursed [anti-suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
An emotional appeal from H. P. Petersen against "Woman Suffrage, that Godforsaken Evil."

By Woman, was Eden lost, and man cursed.

If you trust her, give up all hope of heaven. She cannot love, because she is too selfish. She may have a fancy, but that is flattery. Her smiles are deceit. Her vows are traced iin sand. She is a thread of candor, with a web of wiles.

Her Charity is Hypocrisy.

She is deception every way, hair, teeth, complexion, heart tongue and all. Regarding matrimony, I would not have a Suffragist in my presence, for all the world. It is the duty of the U..S. Government to drive that stubborn woman home, and compel her to take care of the home and the children, where she belongs.

Down with Woman Suffrage, that Godforsaken Evil.

Any feminine entering politics, filling offices, running street-cars and automobiles, loses her motherhood. Any man who does ot defy the Evil is babylike. Woman Suffrage is a crime against the Bible and against Nature. Any feminine, who does not take care of the home, but otherwise enters politics, belongs to jail.

The majority of men worship women as their God.

I am not going that crazy yet. I worship God in Heaven as my God. It is an unnatural idea, to have that female image on the coin. Nature has placed man to be the head of the woman in everything and run governmental affairs. What a childish idea to let woman run mans affairs.

The Bible demands that a woman must be in submission to man.

Turn to the Bible and read the following verses and be convinced:
I Tim. 2: 9-15. Ephe. 5: 22-25. Gen. 3: 16.
I Cor. 14: 34. I Cor. 11:3-16. I Peter 3: 1-6.

H. P. Petersen.

The Dark and Dangerous Side of Woman Suffrage [Anti-suffrage publication]
Description
An account of the resource
A large format publication which gathers quotations from feminists and supporters of suffrage. These quotations manifest the "dark and dangerous side of woman suffrage" which is argued to be a desire for social revolution.

Subject headings for quotations include:
Downfall of the Home, Degradation of Marriage, Fatherless Children, A "Third Sex" in Politics, The Case for Woman Suffrage, The Woman's Bible, Socialism Dovetails Feminism.

From the introduction:
"Much Feminist literature is scarcely fit for publication. The following authentic quotations are selected as among the least obnoxious, to indicate, in some slight degree, the inescapable "next step" after woman suffrage.
If YOU are truly concerned with the welfare of your Family, your Children, your Country, do not make the mistake of ignoring the REAL MEANING of the demand for "Votes for Women."

Description
An account of the resource
Photograph of children ages 8 - 9 in the Neighborhood House Sabbath School, Richmond, VA. Taken in 1921.

In the early 1900’s, non-resident settlement houses were created throughout the country to assist with immigrant adjustment to America. In 1912, the Richmond Section of the National Council of Jewish Women established Neighborhood House at 19th and Broad Streets. Programs of social, recreational and religious activities were provided for the children of recent Jewish immigrants.

Neighborhood House was eventually funded by the Richmond general community, offering activities for all immigrant children and their families. In April 1945, after attendance had declined, Neighborhood House was closed.

Description
An account of the resource
A news digest published by the Department of Race Relations, Federal Council of Churches, New York, NY.

The Federal Council of Churches was an ecumenical association of Protestant denominations in the United States founded in Philadelphia in 1908. It merged with other ecumenical bodies in 1950 to form the present day National Council of Churches.

Masthead: "Gleanings from press releases and other sources to inform busy but sincere people of some of the things affecting the lives of racial minorities. Let's do away with walls ! 'We are all one in Christ Jesus.'
The Material in the News Service is given for information and is not to be construed as declarations of official attitudes or policies of the Department of Race Relations or the Federal Council of Churches."

This issue takes a look back at 1939, noting important stories and trends. Topics include lynchings, jobs and organized labor, peonage, housing, civil rights, health, law, spots, arts, religion, literature, World War 2, and science.

Selected notices:
p. 1 "The Department of Records of Tuskegee Institute lists only three lynchings for the year 1939, a sharp decrease from former years. In eighteen instances law enforcement officers were credited with preventing lynchings, saving twenty-five persons from 'the hands of mobs,'"

p. 2 "The right to vote has been sought with new vigor by Negroes in Southern states. The Klan was revived in an effort to terrify Negroes and keep them from registering in Florida and South Carolina...."

"The refusal of library service was dramatized in Alexandria, Va., where the public librarian called the police to remove five colored youths who sought service in this public institution. Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune, Director of Negro Affairs for the NYA reported at a meeting of the Southern Education Foundation that only 14 per cent of 509 public libraries in 13 Southern stataes provided service for Negroes."

"Health facilities for Negroes are notably lacking. A study in Mississippi made by the American Medical Association showed that there was only one Negro physician for each 14,221 colored persons and only 731 beds in general hospitals for the entire Negro population of more than a million in the state. It is estimated that 75 per cent of the deaths from tuberculosis are Negroes but only 40 beds are available for their care. This represents the worst type of situation."

p. 3 "Joe Louis world's heavyweight champion, defended his title four times in 1939."

"Marian Anderson, internationally known contralto, soared to new heights when she sang to 75,000 and a nationwide radio audience from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, after exclusion by the D. A. R. from using Constitution Hall."

"The threatened growth of anti-Semitism has intensified the study of race relations and many church groups have broadened their consideration of race to include this problem."

"The Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues issued a statement declaring that experiments showed no characteristic inherent psychological differences to distinguish so-called 'races.'"

"From the American Jewish Committee, New York...
Stimulated by the meeting between representatives of the Jewish press and Negro organizations held at the end of September, the Jewish press in the United States has undertaken a systemic campaign to improve relations between Negroes and Jews."

Description
An account of the resource
Pages 7-8 (front and back) removed from Federal Council Bulletin, September-October, 1926. The article, "Church Women Explore Interracial Paths," details an interracial conference held on September 21-22, 1926 at Eagles Mere, Pa.

The conference was organized by the Commission on the Church and Race Relations of the Federal Council of Churchs, the Council of Women for Home Missions, and the National Board of the Y.W.C.A. It was attended by delegates from numerous denominations and organizations. Adele Clark of Richmond, Va. attended representing the National League of Women Voters.

The object of the conference, according to the chair Mrs. Richard W. Westbrook (Mary L. Westbrook), was

"(1) To enlarge the scope of interracial thinking and to enlist the women of the churches more actively in plans and programs for improving the relations between the white and colored groups in America;
(2) To discuss methods of better interracial organization through churches and their auxiliaries so that women may more effectively act on local interracial conditions;
(3) To exchange concrete experiences from groups of women that have already attempted to carry out interracial programs;
(4) To study the past experience of organizations that have done such work, to learn both from the sucesses and failures of such efforts how best to proceed in the future;
(5) To understand better the present trend of feeling and opinion in race relations that the Churches may more effectively work for interracial goodwill and cooperation."

See all documents related to the conference.
