The Negro Vote in the South. A Southern Woman's Viewpoint [suffrage flyer]
Description
An account of the resource
NWSA flyer containing an essay by Mrs. Guilford Dudley of Nashville, TN. Mrs. Dudley addresses the fear among white Southern Congressmen that if all women are given the vote through a Federal Suffrage Amendment, the increase in black voting power will be detrimental to the nation. Dudley notes the success of "educational tests" that limit black voter registration.

For similar arguments with regard to compulsory education, see "Need of Compulsory Education in the South."

The Home Defense: War Messages to The American People
Description
An account of the resource
This booklet by Carrie Chapman Catt likens suffrage to patriotism. According to Catt, the United States "is engaged in two wars, one with an enemy in Europe and one with an enemy at home. Many an American family is left behind without a voter to represent it. Many a voter will never return and will leave no one behind to protect that which was his at the polls...The remedy and the defense is the immediate enfranchisement of women by the shortest process."

"Women of American birth and spirit have been humiliated and distressed as few men understand by the fact that men of American birth and understanding have not arisen in their might to protest against such foreign invasion of American politics and the consequent hindrance of the normal progress of representative government - the ideal to which our country is dedicated above all others!"

A School of Education For Citizenship
Description
An account of the resource
This pamphlet written by Carrier Chapman Catt, Director of the National American Woman Suffrage Association, is advertising for a school of education for citizenship in Chicago. As described by Catt, "the aim of the school is to train women, already equipped with competent knowledge of Civil Government and Political Science, to teach new voters the ideals of American Citizenship, the processes of registering and casting a vote, the methods of making nominations and platforms, the nature of political parties, and the best ways of using a vote to get what they want, and to effect the general welfare of our people." The proposed educational program took place in Chicago's Auditorium Recital Hall from Thursday, February 19th - Wednesday[sic], February 26th under the auspices of the National American Woman Suffrage Association.

War Aims: War Messages to The American People
Description
An account of the resource
"War Aims: War Messages to The American People" was written by Carrie Chapman Catt and provides a critical analysis of the United States' failure to give women the right to vote while other countries have far surpassed America in this regard.

"Give to the world the final pledge of sincerity in American war aims. Give women of this land the honor other nations have bestowed upon theirs. Make democracy triumphant at home that the Republic may war upon its treacherous enemy autocracy without a spot on the national escutcheon. Do it now. Support the Federal Suffrage Amendment!"

This booklet concludes with a poem by Robert Burns, written November 1792:

"While Europe's eye is fixed on mighty things
The fate of empires and the fall of kings;
While quacks of state much each produce his plan,
And Even children lisp the Rights of man;
Amid this mighty fuss just let me mention,
The Rights of Women merit some attention."

What Have Women Done With the Vote?
Description
An account of the resource
This article written by George Creel originally appeared in the March 1914 issue of Century Magazine and was reprinted in pamphlet form by the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Creel's article provides an analysis of the consequences of women being granted the right to vote, including the social, political, and economic implications.

"The opponents of equal suffrage never tire of declaring that woman's place is the home. I agree with them most heartily. It is because of the home that I want women to have the vote... I have always thought, and still think that a government entirely by men is as stupid as a government entirely by women would be. There are as many home features in municipal or state administration as business features...."

Six Reasons Why Farmers' Wives Should Vote [suffrage handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
National Woman Suffrage Association handbill, written by Amelia MacDonald Cutler.

"Because the votes of the farm women would double the rural vote. Farmers have less political influence than they had before the civil war. Farmers need to get back their political power to protect their interests. Farm interests concern the farmer's wife just as much as the farmer. Farmers and their wives voting together would conserve farm interests.
FARMERS, YOUR BEST INTERESTS WOULD BE SERVED BY VOTES FOR YOUR WIVES."
How To Reach The Rural Voter
Description
An account of the resource
This booklet entitled, "How To Reach The Rural Voter," was written by Amelia MacDonald Cutler as a part of the National Woman Suffrage Association's "Efficiency Book Series." This booklet outlines step-by-step instructions on how to best appeal to rural voters and divides these steps into the following chapters: 1) "Character of district and of suffrage objections," 2) "Answers to the suffrage objections," 3) "Kind of suffrage workers," 4) "Cordial relations between farm and suffrage organizations," 5) "Character of arguments for organization," 6) "Of general appeal," and 7) "No appeal."

"The Efficiency Series" is a series "designed to educate suffragists themselves. The pamphlets embody the actual results of practical experience." Other titles in this series include "A Suffrage Training School," "How to work for Suffrage in an Election District or Voting Precinct," "How to Raise Money for Suffrage," "Blue Book Suffrage School," and "Suffrage Argument - Outline for Speech or Debate."

War Messages to The American People: Why Men Need Equal Suffrage for Women
Description
An account of the resource
"War Messages to The American People: Why Men Need Equal Suffrage for Women" is a booklet written by A. Caswell Ellis and details four key points regarding why American men need equal suffrage for women. According to Ellis, "First, the men of this nation must grant equal suffrage to women fully, freely and cheerfully at once, in order to square their nation's acts with its declarations...Second, we need woman's suffrage to protect us and our government from our own one-sided masculine view of life...Third, men need to grant to women the privileges and duties of citizenship in order to strengthen the weakening family bond and enrich and eleveate the home life for themselves and their children...Fourth, and most far reaching of all, man must grant equal suffrage to woman in order to refine his own sense of justice which is inevitably dulled by the continued toleration of any acts of injustice."

Laws of Virginia with Regard to Women Contrasted with Laws Where Women Vote [Equal Suffrage League handbill]
Description
An account of the resource
This sheet compares Virginia laws pertaining to women with those of states where female suffrage already had been approved. Arranged in two contrasting columns, the sheet presents twelve points and includes an Equal Suffrage League of Virginia enrollment form on the second page. Laws covered include those relating to property rights, inheritance, and parental guardianship.

The League was founded in 1909 and included prominent women such as Adèle Clark, Ellen Glasgow, Mary Johnston, Mary Munford, Nora Houston, and Lila Meade Valentine (the league’s first president). After a decade of failure to convince Virginia’s representatives that women should have the vote, the League switched focus to winning Congressional passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.
Equal Suffrage and the Negro Vote [broadside]
Description
An account of the resource
This broadside was issued by the Equal Suffrage League in about 1916.

Southern suffragists were forced to respond to anti-suffrage groups who argued that if African American women gained the right to vote, white supremacy would be threatened. Although some prominent suffragists claimed that their response was borne only out of expedience, and not principle, they nonetheless employed Jim Crow arguments by emphasizing the power of the literacy test and the poll tax.
