Dig In! [editorial cartoon by Fred O. Seibel]
Description
Editorial cartoon in support of the Salvation Army Home Service Fund by Fred O. Seibel, published in The Knickerbocker Press, May 1919. Mounted and identified as no. 741.
This Salvation Army campaign was conducted between May 19-26, 1919 to raise money to rebuild the Salvation Army after its service in World War I, and to provide for the needs of soldiers returning from war. National Doughnut Day, celebrated the first Friday of June, honors the Salvation Army members who served soldiers in World War I.
In 1917, over two hundred-fifty Salvation Army volunteers went overseas to France to provide supplies and baked goods, including donuts, to American soldiers.
A woman from the Salvation Army stands behind an upturned tambourine filled with coins.
Text:
"Dig In!
Veteran: "Believe Me, If you want to come across for a worthy cause, get in on this toot sweet!"
Moses Crow: "Ask the man who knows!"
