Description

Handbill advertising the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage procession, May 9, 1914. The women were demanding a United States Constitutional Amendment Enfranchising Women. The march gathered at the Belasco Theatre and processed to the Capitol in Washington, D.C. 

Nation-wide demonstrations were held on May 2, 1914  in support of Amendment. Envoys from these demonstrations brought petitions to Washington on May 9th and carried them in procession to Congress from Lafayette Square. Five thousand women massed on and about the East Steps of the Capitol singing "The March of the Women"  composed by Ethel Smyth in 1910, to words by Cicely Hamilton.
